Argylle adalah film komedi aksi spionase arahan Matthew Vaugn yang pula menggarap Kick Ass (2010), X-Men: First Class (2011), serta seri spionase Kingsman. Film ini dibintangi oleh sederetan bintang-bintang besar, antara lain Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose, John Cena, serta Samuel L. Jackson. Dengan bermodal sang sineas dan para bintangnya, Argylle sepertinya bakal menjanjikan sesuatu yang spesial, benarkah?

Elly Conway (Howard) adalah seorang novelis ternama yang sukses dengan seri spionase bertitel Argylle. Di ambang penulisan bab akhir novel kelimanya, Elly pulang ke rumah orang tuanya menggunakan kereta api. Di dalam kereta, ia bertemu dengan sekelompok orang yang ingin membunuhnya, dan pula terdapat seorang agen bernama Aidan (Rockwell) yang berusaha melindunginya. Elly pun terjebak dalam sebuah pertualangan di mana ia sulit membedakan antara fantasi dan realita.

Premisnya menarik. Namun, apa yang terjadi jika kita mencampuradukkan fantasi dan realitas terlalu berlebihan? Hasilnya adalah nol ancaman dan chemistry. Nol ancaman berarti nol ketegangan. Seberapa pun hebat aksi-aksinya, plotnya tak pernah bisa kita nikmati sepatutnya. Kita seolah menikmati aksi tanpa jiwa. Sisi komedi juga tidak banyak membantu selain hanya membuat aksinya lebih tampak tidak serius. Tempo plot cepat serta eksposisi yang lemah, juga berdampak besar pada chemistry pada tokoh-tokoh utamanya. Hingga akhir dengan segala twist-nya, tak ada simpati pada satu karakter pun, kecuali mungkin Alfie (si kucing). Betapa menyedihkan.

Argylle terjebak dalam kisah fiksi dan nonfiksi berlebihan yang mengurangi ancaman dan chemistry kisahnya serta mengabaikan talenta para pemain besarnya. Lalu dimana peran Cavill? Semoga fansnya tidak kecewa. Tak ada keraguan bagi sang sineas dalam mengeksekusi adegan-adegan aksinya. Vaugn memang kita kenal dengan aksi-aksi absurdnya, seperti aksi “ice skating” yang kelewat edan, walau tidak sebrutal seri Kingsman. Ini masalah selera, namun tidak mampu menutupi naskahnya yang bobrok dan tak masuk akal. Jika mereka memiliki senjata pamungkas begitu simpel, mengapa oh mengapa, tidak menggunakannya sejak awal? Betapa menggelikan.
