Veteran-turned-mercenary Toorop takes the high-risk job of escorting a woman from Russia to America. Little does he know that she is host to an organism that a cult wants to harvest in order to produce a genetically modified Messiah.

Satu lagi film aksi fiksi-ilmiah bertajuk, Babylon AD dirilis di penghujung musim panas tahun ini. Film ini diarahkan oleh sineas asal Perancis, Mathieu Kassovitz yang merupakan film produksi Amerika keduanya setelah film drama supernatural, Gothika (2003). Babylon AD dibintangi nama-nama besar seperti Vin Diesel, Michele Yeoh, Gérard Depardieu, serta aktris muda Mélanie Thierry.

Alkisah di masa mendatang tidak jauh dari sekarang, kondisi dunia semakin memburuk akibat aksi terorisme, pemanasan global, hingga masalah kemiskinan. Di sebuah wilayah Rusia, seorang tentara bayaran asal AS, Toorop (Diesel) suatu ketika mendapatkan tawaran pekerjaan menggiurkan dari seorang gangster Rusia bernama Gorsky (Depardieu). Tugas Toorop sederhana, yakni mengantarkan seorang gadis muda bernama Aurora (Thierry) ke kota New York, Amerika dengan selamat. Turut menyertai mereka adalah Suster Rebeka (Yeoh) yang telah mengasuh sang gadis sejak bayi. Tugas Toorop ternyata tidak mudah karena suatu komplotan asing berniat menculik sang gadis. Aurora ternyata menyimpan sebuah rahasia besar yang kelak dapat menyelamatkan dunia.

Faktor yang sepertinya diharapkan menjadi daya tarik utama film ini, yakni adegan-adegan aksinya juga disajikan kurang menggigit. Penggunaan aktor dan aktris laga sekelas Diesel serta Yeoh ternyata tidak cukup banyak membantu adegan aksinya. Adegan aksi tembak-menembak, perkelahian, hingga kejar-mengejar sama sekali tidak ada yang istimewa. Satu-satunya adegan aksi yang terbilang lumayan hanyalah aksi kejar-mengejar antara skuter salju dan dua buah pesawat tempur. Namun satu pencapaian menarik di film ini adalah setting-nya yang sangat meyakinkan. Sineas dengan sempurna mampu menampilkan suasana yang kontras antara kondisi di wilayah Rusia yang kumuh dan gelap dengan suasana kota New York yang modern. Sangat disayangkan pencapaian setting yang sedemikian baik tidak didukung alur cerita yang memadai. Overall… It’s just bad and getting worst everytime…
