Bird Box Barcelona merupakan sekuel spin-off dari Bird Box (2018) yang diadaptasi dari novel bertitel sama karya Josh Malerman. Film produksi Spanyol yang ditulis dan diarahkan dua bersaudara Alex dan David Pastor ini baru saja dirilis platform Netflix ketika artikel ini ditulis. Dikisahkan bencana misterius melanda bumi. Para monster meneror umat manusia yang jika membuka mata mereka akan memicu bunuh diri. Di Kota Barcelona, Spanyol, dikisahkan Sebastian (Casas) belum bisa lepas dari trauma kematian sang istri. Bersama putrinya, Anna, Sebastian memberi kesan untuk bertahan hidup seperti seri sebelumnya dengan mencari para penyintas lainnya. Ternyata sebaliknya, Sebastian justru mencari para penyintas untuk diumpankan pada para monster. Pertanyaannya adalah mengapa?

Sekadar mengingatkan aturan main seri pertama, sang monster bekerja di ruang terbuka. Jika sedikitpun seseorang membuka mata, maka dia akan terbunuh. Seseorang harus berada di ruang tertutup cahaya agar bisa selamat. Jika ingin keluar harus menggunakan penutup mata, baik kain, kacamata renang, atau lainnya. Siapa dan mengapa mereka meneror umat manusia masih belum jelas. Sekuelnya kali ini memberikan sedikit petunjuk bagaimana sang monster bekerja. Rupanya, para monster ini secara psikologis mampu menggunakan rasa takut, trauma, keinginan mendalam tiap mangsanya yang memicu mereka untuk mengakhiri hidup. Singkatnya, para monster tidak menyerang fisik melainkan pikiran.

Aksi-aksinya pun tak jauh berbeda dari seri pertama. Sisi ketegangan dibangun melalui setting-nya yang unik, baik indoor maupun outdoor. Latar kota pasca bencana menjadi salah satu kekuatan terbesar melalui visualisasi dan situasi kota Barcelona yang kosong dan porak poranda. Kabarnya, filmnya dibuat di lokasi yang sesungguhnya. Kisahnya mengambil banyak lokasi di sudut-sudut kota, salah satunya benteng Montjüic yang menjadi salah satu landmark Barcelona dengan kereta gantungnya. Faktor ini yang tegas membedakan dari seri pertamanya yang berlokasi di pemukiman pinggiran dan hutan.

Bird Box Barcelona merupakan sekuel unik melalui pendekatan berbeda dari seri pertamanya dengan lebih mengeksplorasi sisi gelap manusia. Lantas apa motif para monster? Entahlah. Bisa jadi bakal terkuak sejalan dengan sekuel-sekuelnya kelak, jika ada. Setidaknya, film kali ini memberikan ruang tafsir lebih luas tentang kisahnya, walau ini tidak lagi bisa dikatakan segar. Monster zombi sering kali menjadi alegori sifat liar dalam diri manusia. Sementara monster dalam Bird Box bisa diartikan sebagai rasa takut dan trauma terdalam manusia. Sosok Sebastian menjadi model sempurna untuk mengirimkan pesannya. Rasa kehilangan rupanya masih identik dengan sisi gelap manusia di mana medium film telah mengeksplorasinya dalam berbagai bentuk dan genre.
