Black Mass sedikit banyak mengingatkan pada film gangster garapan Ridley Scott, American Gangster mengisahkan bagaimana seorang gangster membantu polisi untuk menghabisi satu gembong kriminal, juga The Departed/Infernal Affairs yang menggunakan oknum dari dua pihak untuk saling memata-matai. Black Mass agak berbeda, plot drama kisah nyata ini intinya adalah bagaimana James “Whitey” Bulger (Depp) pelan-pelan mengontrol dunia kriminal kota Boston dengan bekerja sama dengan oknum FBI untuk menghabisi pesaingnya, mafia Italia, serta melancarkan semua bisnis gelapnya. Satu demi satu orang-orang yang menghalangi jalan James ia bunuh dengan tangannya sendiri.

Proses cerita yang rumit dan panjang cenderung membuat penonton bosan dan mudah terlelap. Terlalu banyak intrik yang tak berarti juga semakin membuat kisahnya datar tanpa tangga dramatik yang semakin naik. Klimaks justru malah menjadi antiklimaks. Semuanya serba datar tanpa ada kejutan sama sekali. Potensi kisahnya sebenarnya sangat menarik, bagaimana kerjasama oknum FBI – gangster bisa terjalin sama-sama menguntungkan namun sayangnya pengembangan kisahnya tidak bisa dieksplor lebih dramatik.

Film ini semata tertolong oleh permainan akting memikat para kastingnya, khususnya Edgerton, Cumberbacth, dan tentu saja Depp yang bermain sangat menawan. Sosok Depp yang dingin layaknya vampir dengan make-up serta aksen khas membuat penampilannya ini adalah salah satu yang terbaik dalam karirnya. Sayang penampilan Dakota Johson, aktris yang kini tengah naik daun tidak bisa kita lihat lebih banyak.

Black Mass tak lebih adalah drama biografi gangster medioker yang tertolong oleh penampilan mengesankan dari Johnny Depp yang tampil dingin sebagai James Bulger. Sudah terlampau banyak film gangster yang lebih baik dari ini, sebut saja Public Enemy yang dibintangi Depp sendiri. Hollywood sepertinya mulai kehabisan ide cerita menarik untuk film drama biografi sejenis, tak heran genre ini semakin tenggelam oleh genre-genre populer yang lain.
