Siapa tak kenal Marilyn Monroe? Bisa jadi untuk generasi masa kini namanya terasa asing. Foto ikoniknya dengan rok putih yang terhembus angin laju subway bisa jadi lebih dikenal daripada film-film yang dibintanginya. Melalui sineas Andrew Dominik, sang superstar diangkat dalam sebuah biopik yang kini penuh kontroversi, Blonde. Ana De Armas, bermain sebagai sang legenda didampingi Adrien Brody, Boby Cannavale, dan Sara Paxton. Naskahnya diadaptasi dari novel laris berjudul sama karya Joyce Carol Oates. Lantas seperti apa film yang mendapat standing ovation di Venice Film Festival bulan lalu?

“Isn’t all love based on illusion?”

Norma Jeane (Armas) sejak kecil sudah hidup dalam tekanan sang ibu yang memiliki gangguan kejiwaan. Trauma masa ciliknya ternyata berimbas ketika ia mulai meniti karirnya di Hollywood. Berganti nama panggung Marilyn Monroe, ia berubah nasib menjadi seorang megabintang. Sosok Monroe dengan kehidupan selebritisnya yang seringkali tampil vulgar, membuatnya dicap perempuan “binal”. Trauma masa lalu dan hingar bingar kehidupannya juga membuatnya jauh dari kebahagiaan serta ketenangan yang ia dambakan.

Satu hal, Blonde jelas bukan tontonan orang awam. Pendekatan estetiknya yang sangat lambat dan banyak bermain dengan shot dekat, membuatnya jauh dari tontonan biopik lazimnya. Terlebih lagi, adegan kekerasan seksual yang demikian vulgar dijamin bakal membuat penonton tak nyaman dengan visualnya. Pilihan alur plot pun melompat ke momen-momen di mana sang protagonis mengalami masa suka dukanya yang penuh trauma. Entah ini sumber novelnya atau pilihan sang sineas, yang jelas, alur kisahnya tidak mampu dipahami secara runtut, selain hanya menyajikan derita demi derita sang bintang. Plus pendekatan estetiknya yang bergaya teatrikal semakin menjauhkan simpati dan empati pada sang tokoh, di luar pencapaian sang pemain yang bermain luar biasa.

Dalam beberapa adegan, saya justru terkesan dengan penggunaan potongan-potongan film yang menyajikan cuplikan dialog yang tak disadari mereflesikan kehidupan sang bintang kala itu. Pada satu cuplikan adegan di kereta api dalam komedi klasik Some Like it Hot (1959), sang lawan main (Tony Curtis) berujar “What’s the matter with you anyway?”, ia berujar, “I’am not very bright, I guess” yang disahut, “I wouldn’t say that, careless maybe”. Lalu anehnya, tak lama adegan berbalik arah dengan ucapan dialog yang salah, dan Monroe pun keluar dari set. Lalu satu lagi di film yang sama adalah cuplikan adegan ketika ia menyanyikan “I Wanna be Loved by You”. Satu hal “sepele” yang diinginkan sang bintang dari orang-orang terdekatnya.

Cuplikan macam ini seringkali digunakan dalam biopik sejenis, yang ini justru menjadi tribute berkelas untuk mengenang sang tokoh. Sayang sekali, film ini sama sekali tidak mengarah ke sana. Alih-alih justru menampilkan potongan film fiksi ilmiah, roket dan UFO ketika adegan oral sang bintang dengan Presiden JFK. Apakah adegan menjijikkan ini sungguh terjadi?

Dengan segala polemiknya, Blonde mampu mengangkat pamor sang pemeran melalui akting, namun jelas bukan tontonan tipikal drama biografi yang menggugah dan menginspirasi. Ana de Armas sudah melakukan tugasnya dengan sangat baik. Hanya saja, apakah ini, memori yang ingin dikenang penonton untuk memberi tribute pada sang superstar? Dari sisi akting, Monroe memang bukan aktris brilian selevel Gloria Swanson, Katherine Hepburn, atau Audrey Hepburn. Namun, sang superstar punya pesona sensual yang tak dimiliki aktris -aktris besar tersebut. Kembali ke pertanyaan di atas, Anda bisa menjawabnya sendiri. Sekaligus menjawab kontroversi yang hilir mudik kini di berita media sosial.
