Setelah kemarin mengulas werewolf (Viking Wolf), kini berganti dengan film varian horor monster lainnya. Blood adalah film arahan Brad Andersen yang dibintangi Michelle Monaghan, Skeet Ulrich, Finlay Wojtak-Hissong, serta Skylar Morgan Jones. Film berdurasi 108 menit ini dirilis oleh platform Amazon Prime baru lalu. Vampir adalah satu subgenre horor yang sulit dieksplorasi karena terlalu banyaknya film bertema ini, namun Blood rupanya masih mampu melihat celah kecil dalam subgenre ini. Uniknya, inti kisahnya pun juga tak jauh dari Viking Wolf.

Jess (Monaghan) pindah ke rumah lamanya setelah memenangkan hak asuh dua anaknya, Owen (Hissong) dan Tyler (Jones). Rumah tersebut berlokasi di wilayah pinggiran yang cukup terisolir. Kejanggalan mulai terasa ketika anjing mereka, Pippen, berpolah seolah ada sesuatu di luar sana. Satu ketika sang anjing berlari keluar mengejar sesuatu dan hilang tanpa jejak. Keesokan harinya Pippen pun datang, namun berubah menjadi buas dan menggigit leher Owen. Beruntung Owen lolos dari maut, namun ada sesuatu yang aneh setelahnya. Owen kini tak doyan makan, dan ia hanya menginginkan darah segar, yang ini hanya diketahui sang ibu.

Plotnya terbilang segar untuk genrenya melalui eksplorasi tema vampir dengan cara tak biasa. Sang protagonis dalam film ini juga adalah antagonis, baik Jess maupun Owen. Kita pernah melihat dua plot ini dalam dua bahkan tiga film yang berbeda. Nuansa kengerian yang dimunculkan pun sungguh berbeda. Sang ibu melakukan apa pun demi Owen, dan ini ibarat memberi makan singa buas yang lapar. Situasi ini jelas memberikan sensasi horor yang berbeda di tengah situasi yang serba sulit bagi sang ibu. Sayangnya, plotnya berakhir dengan eksekusi antiklimaks yang memilih pendekatan personal. Saya tidak bilang, harus ada pembantaian masal layaknya Viking Wolf, namun ini memang bisa membuat hiburan bagi penikmat horor.

Blood menawarkan kisah yang segar untuk subgenrenya, namun sayangnya eksekusi akhir terasa kurang menggigit. Tiga pemain utamanya (ibu dan dua anaknya), Monaghan, Hissong, dan Jones bermain sangat baik dalam peran yang relatif sulit ini. Naskahnya mengaburkan penampilan memikat mereka. Tema berat semacam ini sejatinya bisa dieksplorasi lebih jauh dalam  mengeksplorasi hubungan ibu-anak, kakak dan adik. Resolusi pun sebenarnya bisa lebih dramatik dan menyentuh. Lagi-lagi, mirip Viking Wolf, muatan dan pesan yang kuat menjadi kabur dan menyia-nyiakan potensi dari premisnya yang menarik.
