Setelah DCEU (DC Extended Universe) gagal komersial dalam film-film sebelumnya, yakni Black Adam, Shazam 2, serta baru lalu The Flash, mereka masih menyisakan dua film lagi yang sudah kadung diproduksi. Blue Beetle adalah film superhero DC arahan sineas Puerto, Rico Ángel Manuel Soto. Film ini dimaksudkan menjadi seri ke-14 dari DCEU (DC Extended Universe) sebelum serinya kini di-reboot oleh CEO baru mereka, James Gunn. Film ini didominasi para pemain Amerika latin, yakni  Xolo Maridueña, Bruna Marquezine, Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Max Trujillo, George Lopez, serta aktris senior Susan Sarandon. Akankah Blue Beetle terperosok seperti film-film DCEU sebelumnya?

Keluarga Jaime (Maridueña) mengalami masalah ekonomi untuk mempertahankan rumah mereka yang tergusur oleh proyek perusahaan Kord. Sang CEO, Victoria Kord (Sarandon) kini tengah memproduksi sebuah senjata maha ampuh yang berbasis teknologi alien bernama Scarab. Keponakan Victoria, Jenny (Marquezine) yang tak setuju dengan visi bibinya, berupaya mencuri Scarab di kantor pusat Kord. Terdesak situasi, Jenny pun memberikan Scarab pada Jaime yang tengah mencari pekerjaan di kantor tersebut. Keluarga Jaime yang penasaran dengan benda asing tersebut justru mengaktifkan Scarab dan masuk ke dalam tubuh Jaime. Jaime pun mendadak mendapat kekuatan super yang tak mampu ia kontrol.

Kemunculan pemeran superhero latin (live action) produksi Hollywood adalah tercatat untuk kali pertama ini. Terhitung sosok Miles Morales telah mencuri start pertama melalui film animasi Spider-Man into the Spider-Verse. Tidak hanya sineas dan pera pemainnya, namun segala nuansa Blue Beetle adalah beraroma latin. Bahasa latin pun sering digunakan dalam dialognya sehingga kerap teks dobel pun menghiasi layar. Tradisi keluarga dan komunitas yang menjadi ciri khas budaya latin tercermin kuat dan hangat. Rupanya ini pula yang menjadi dasar konsep kisah Blue Beetle dengan karakter-karakter uniknya. Ini menjadi pembeda Blue Beetle dengan film-film superhero lainnya.

Sayangnya potensi ini tidak dieksplorasi mendalam melalui kisahnya yang terlalu jamak untuk genrenya. Melalui kisah tipikal struktur tiga babak, alur plotnya terlalu mudah untuk diantisipasi. Tempo plot bergerak begitu cepatnya hingga latar kisah dan karakter pun tak banyak digagas. Alhasil, kita butuh waktu untuk bersimpati dengan tokoh-tokohnya. Misal saja, chemistry Jaime dan Jenny terasa agak memaksa karena mereka baru saja saling mengenal. Dua hal sedikit menolong kisahnya, yakni unsur humor dan aksinya yang menghibur. Keduanya saling terikat kuat melalui dialog dan polah konyol tokoh-tokohnya yang seringkali membuat kita tergelak.

Blue Beetle memiliki nuansa latin, humor, serta tema keluarga yang hangat, namun terlalu tipikal untuk genrenya dengan tempo yang tergesa. Lalu bagaimana aksinya (CGI)? Sama sekali tidak buruk, namun juga tidak istimewa. Konsep superhero macam ini sudah kita lihat beberapa kali dalam genrenya. Sisi keluarga juga bukan hal baru dalam genrenya. Shazam!, Ant-Man, hingga The Guardian of the Galaxy memiliki standar yang tinggi untuk tema ini. Andai dirilis beberapa dekade silam, Blue Beetle bisa menjadi sesuatu yang besar. Lantas bagaimana peluang box-office-nya kini? Jika sosok populer Shazam dan Flash/Batman saja gagal, apalagi karakter ini. Siapa tahu, kelompok penonton hispanik bisa mengangkat film ini. Bagaimana pula nasib Aquaman 2 yang rasanya bakal semakin suram bagi DCEU.
