Satu lagi film adaptasi video gim RPG populer dirilis, yakni Borderland yang diadaptasi dari gim berjudul sama. Borderlands diarahkan oleh sineas spesialis horor, Eli Roth yang tahun lalu menggarap horor slasher apik, Thanksgiving (2023). Film ini dibintangi beberapa nama besar, Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Édgar Ramírez, Ariana Greenblatt, Florian Munteanu, Gina Gershon, dan Jamie Lee Curtis. Bermodal sineas dan nama-nama besar pemainnya mampukah film sci-fi  berbujet USD 100-120 juta ini memberi suntikan segar bagi subgenrenya?

Film ini mengisahkan semesta antah berantah yang dahulu kala dihuni oleh ras tangguh bernama Eridien. Eridien kini telah punah dan menyisakan warisan berupa lokasi rahasia (vault) di Planet Pandora yang di dalamnya terdapat senjata maha dahsyat. Untuk bisa menemukan lokasi tersebut dibutuhkan dua benda khusus dan seseorang terpilih yang merupakan turunan terakhir Eridien. Setelah sekian lama, tak ada seorang pun yang bisa menemukan vault tersebut.

Diketahui, Tiny Tina (Greenblat) adalah sosok remaja perempuan yang dianggap sebagai sang terpilih yang juga putri seorang pengusaha berpengaruh bernama Atlas (Ramirez). Tina kini berada di sebuah penjara di Planet Pandora dan berhasil dibebaskan oleh Roland (Hart) bersama satu tahanan bernama Krieg (Munteanu). Sementara Atlas mengirimkan seorang pemburu bayaran tangguh bernama Lilith (Blanchett) bersama robot setianya Claptrap yang cerewet (Black). Mengetahui Atlas rupanya hanya memanfaatkan dirinya, Lilith pun bergabung bersama Roland untuk mencari lokasi rahasia tersebut.

Dari ringkasan plot di atas, nuansa petualangan plot (gimnya) bersama ragam karakternya telah kental bisa kita rasakan. Belum lama, Dungeon & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves juga memiliki plot yang senada, termasuk pula Monster Hunter (2020). Film tentang sekelompok tim non-adaptasi gim pun juga telah sering kita jumpai, sebut saja seri The Guardian of the Galaxy, Suicide Squad, hingga Rebel Moon. Borderland tak lagi menyajikan sesuatu yang baru.

Potensi minus dari film bertipikal ini adalah eksposisi yang lemah. Seperti Rebel Moon, banyak tokoh yang unik dan beragam, menjadikan latar kisahnya tidak terolah dengan baik, tidak terkecuali Borderlands. Tidak seperti gim, cerita film membutuhkan eksposisi yang cukup untuk menggambarkan tiap karakter utamanya. Satu narasi ringkas oleh Lilith rupanya dianggap cukup untuk memberi background cerita. Nyatanya tidak. Berjalannya waktu, plotnya hanya dipenuhi oleh aksi buru-memburu tanpa banyak info baru yang mendukung. Hingga akhir pun, kita masih sulit bersimpati dan berempati dengan mereka. Aksi-aksi nonstop yang menegangkan dan twist ending-nya menjadi tidak membekas karena tidak terasa adanya ancaman yang berarti.

Borderlands adalah satu adaptasi game sci-fi populer medioker yang mengadopsi beberapa elemen yang tak lagi asing dalam medium film. Entah, apakah film ini bisa memuaskan para fans gimnya? Bagi saya, ini jauh dari memuaskan dan rasa kantuk menghampiri nyaris sepanjang film. Semua karakternya, dapat kita rasakan bakal selalu “aman” dari bahaya, segenting apa pun situasinya. Why on earth, aktris sekaliber Blanchett yang identik dengan film-film drama berkualitas tinggi, mau bermain dalam film aksi seperti ini?
