Brooklyn diadaptasi dari novel berjudul sama yang ditulis oleh Colm Toibin yang mengisahkan tentang gadis imigran asal Irlandia yang mencoba meraih mimpi di negeri Paman Sam. Eilish (Saoirce Ronan) merasa jengah di desanya, Enniscorthy, Irlandia, karena kehidupannya yang monoton. Rose, sang kakak mendukung adiknya untuk pergi dari sana dan mencoba peruntungan di Amerika dengan bantuan relasinya, pendeta Flood (Jim Broadbent). Eilish beradaptasi cepat dengan pekerjaannya dan bahkan ia bisa melanjutkan studinya. Ia bertemu pria Italia, Tony, di sebuah pesta dansa yang berlanjut pada hubungan asmara. Tak banyak rintangan berarti selama ia di Brooklyn hingga ia mendengar kabar buruk dari kampung halamannya.

Tak banyak kejutan berarti di kisahnya tidak hingga separuh durasi filmnya. Konflik dilema moral baru muncul disini dan ini pun juga tidak sulit untuk diprediksi. Secara keseluruhan kisahnya berjalan dengan tempo sedang, tidak membosankan memang, namun juga tidak ada sesuatu yang menarik disini (kecuali satu adegan), kisah drama seperti ini sudah terlampau umum. Sisi sejarah sepertinya jadi inti kisah sebenarnya. Melalui sosok Eilish, film ini mampu menggambarkan mengapa warga Irlandia banyak yang pindah ke Amerika pada masa itu. Budaya kolot dan tradisional desa memang berbanding terbalik dengan suasana Brooklyn yang lebih modern dan bebas untuk melakukan apa saja yang kita mau.

Satu hal yang menarik dalam film ini adalah tradisi makan malam pada asrama Irlandia di rumah Eilish tinggal. Selain menjadi penggerak cerita, adegan ini juga menjadi momen yang menghibur, kadang membicarakan hal yang sama sekali tak penting. Adegan ini beberapa kali muncul dengan karakter-karakter yang unik, Eilish sendiri serta beberapa gadis asrama senior, termasuk sang pemilik rumah yang karismatik, Nyonya Kahoe. Adegan ini begitu menawan dengan dialog-dialog yang cepat memperlihatkan bagaimana mereka bergunjing banyak hal, dengan Nyonya Kahoe bertindak sebagai polisi moral disini. Akting yang amat menawan menjadi kunci keberhasilan adegan ini, khususnya penampilan Julie Walter (Kahoe). Sayangnya adegan ini tidak dieksplor lebih jauh di separuh kedua filmnya.

Melalui tokoh utamanya, Brooklyn mampu menggambarkan secara ringan, suka duka imigran asal Irlandia di AS pada era 50-an. Diluar penampilan Saoirce Ronan yang memikat, film drama ini tidak menawarkan banyak hal yang baru untuk genrenya. Film ini meraih tiga nominasi Oscar termasuk untuk film terbaik. Peluang jelas tipis namun untuk sebuah film bertema sejarah yang berbujet hanya US$11 juta prestasi film ini jelas tergolong istimewa.
