Civil War adalah film drama perang distopian yang digarap oleh Alex Garland yang menggarap film sci-fi berkelas macam Ex Machina (2014) dan Annihilation (2018). Civil War dibintangi oleh Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Sonoya Mizuno, Nick Offerman, dan Jesse Plemons. Film ini dirilis studio A24, tercatat merupakan produksi film termahalnya yang mencapai USD 50 juta. Dengan bermodal tema unik dan talenta sang sineas, apakah film ini mampu memberikan suntikan segar bagi genrenya?

AS tengah dilanda perang sipil hebat antara Pemerintah AS yang berkuasa dengan pemerintah beberapa negara bagian, salah satunya Western Front (WF), gabungan Texas dan California. Presiden yang berada di Washington DC mendapat tekanan hebat, tinggal menanti waktu sebelum kota tersebut direbut. Fotografer perang kenamaan, Lee Smith (Dunst) bersama dua rekannya, Sammy (Henderson) dan Joel (Moura) berniat untuk mewawancara presiden ke DC melalui perjalanan mobil ratusan mil di tengah perang yang berkecamuk. Mereka juga membawa seorang fotografer muda, Jessie (Spaeny) yang awalnya tidak dikehendaki Lee. Seperti sudah diduga, perjalanan ini bukanlah sesuatu hal yang mudah.

Satu pertanyaan besar tentunya adalah bagaimana ini semua bisa terjadi? Secara cerdik, plotnya tidak memberikan jawaban yang gamblang, melainkan membiarkan penonton menafsirkan dari semua apa yang terlihat dalam perjalanan ini. Jika kamu berharap aksi-aksi heboh, Civil War tidak terfokus pada sisi aksi perang melainkan drama dan sentuhan humanis yang menyertainya. Relasi antarkarakter, khususnya Lee dan Jessie, terjalin sepanjang perjalanan sekaligus memberi pecahan informasi kecil tentang apa yang tengah terjadi. Seperti halnya film-film Road Movies kebanyakan, perjalanan dan petualangan ini yang akan mendewasakan mereka.

Civil War menyimpan aksi besarnya pada penghujung film. Sebuah aksi yang sangat menegangkan ketika Lee dan dua rekannya mengikuti pasukan WF yang mencoba menembus area gedung putih. Satu aspek teknis yang sungguh meyakinkan adalah efek suara. Suara desingan peluru dan bom saling bersahutan sungguh memekakkan telinga. Menonton film ini di bioskop yang memiliki tata suara maksimal adalah sebuah keharusan karena aksi ini adalah salah satu yang terbaik dan serasa paling nyata dari beberapa film perang beberapa tahun belakangan.

Civil War merupakan kombinasi genre perang dan roadmovies yang segar melalui perspektif jurnalis, sekaligus menyajikan realitas suram politik AS. Film ini bisa menjadi sebuah ramalan masa depan jika AS dipimpin oleh pemerintah yang salah. Penonton asal AS rasanya bakal mampu memahami dan mengapresiasi kisah film ini lebih baik. Kita hanya bisa melihat fakta-fakta yang tersaji sekarang, seperti sikap pemerintah AS yang menjadi polisi dunia, serta kekerasan senjata api di AS yang tidak pernah surut hingga kini.
