Daybreakers merupakan film horor-fiksi ilmiah yang ditulis dan diarahkan oleh Michael dan Pieter Spierig. Duo sineas ini sebelum ini tercatat hanya sekali memproduksi film yang bertema sejenis pula, yakni Undead (2003). Film kelas dua berbujet $20 juta ini dibintangi oleh bintang-bintang ternama yakni, Ethan Hawke, Willem Defoe, Sam Neill, serta Claudia Carvan.

Alkisah tahun 2019, pendemi “vampir” melanda seluruh muka bumi sehingga nyaris seluruh umat manusia berubah menjadi vampir. “Ras” baru ini mencoba mengatur hidup mereka sehari-hari layaknya manusia. Entah telah berapa lama, ras vampir ini semakin tertekan karena kebutuhan utama mereka, yakni darah, semakin sulit didapat. Distribusi dan suplai darah dalam negeri diatur oleh sebuah perusahaan milik Charles Bromley (Neill). Edward Dalton (Hawke) adalah seorang peneliti perusahaan tersebut yang mencoba mengembangkan darah sintetis sebagai ganti darah manusia. Dalton bersimpati dengan ras manusia yang berada diambang kepunahan. Suatu ketika Dalton bertemu dengan seorang eksentrik (manusia) bernama Elvis (Defoe) yang mengaku memiliki obat untuk vampir.

Daybreaker bisa dibilang merupakan variasi baru plot vampir. Sudah menjadi impian saya sejak lama ingin melihat bagaimana jika ras manusia musnah dan tergantikan ras vampir. Film ini dalam banyak hal menyajikan hal ini. Menyenangkan melihat keseharian para vampir layaknya manusia. Seluruh kota dirancang ulang dengan dihubungkan oleh jalan-jalan bawah tanah, para vampir mengantri kopi yang dicampur darah, suara peringatan matahari terbit, hingga mobil yang ditutup kaca anti ultra violet jika berkendaraan di siang hari. Idenya memang menarik, sayang alur plotnya mestinya bisa lebih baik dari ini. Durasi filmnya yang hanya sekitar satu setengah jam rasanya terlalu singkat untuk cerita filmnya. Alur plot babak kedua dan ketiga filmnya seperti standar film-film vampir lazimnya, “hide and run” dan berakhir dengan pertempuran senjata biasa.

Untuk film berbujet hanya $20 juta, Daybreaker memiliki pencapaian visual yang sangat baik. Karakter vampir sekalipun dirias sederhana namun sudah cukup meyakinkan, berkulit pucat dengan mata menyala yang membedakan mereka dengan manusia. Setting masa depan pun disajikan begitu meyakinkan baik suasana kota, subway, perumahan modern, hingga mobil unik yang jika dikendarai siang hari menggunakan tampilan monitor untuk melihat jalan. Efek visual memang tidak sekelas film-film besar namun untuk film kelas dua seperti ini pencapaiannya sudah sangat baik.

Seperti film vampir masa kini kebanyakan Daybreaker bisa diartikan nurani manusia yang telah hilang. “Satu tetes darah” manusia mampu menghilangkan “sifat jahat” yang ada dalam diri vampir. Daybreaker dengan ide plotnya yang orisinil, performa para pemainnya yang lumayan, serta pencapaian estetiknya yang sederhana rasanya mampu menghibur penonton, terutama para fans sejati vampir.
