Baru beberapa bulan lalu versi live-action Pinocchio dirilis Disney+, kini sineas kawakan Guillermo del Toro membuat versi animasi stop motion-nya dengan kisah yang belum pernah kita lihat sebelumnya. Del Toro menulis, menyutradarai serta memproduseri film ini, dengan dibintangi nama-nama besar sebagai pengisi suara, antara lain Ewan McGregor, Tilda Swinton, David Bradley, Ron Pearlman, Christopher Gantz, John Turturro, Cate Blanchett, hingga Gregory Mann. Pinocchio dirilis Netflix pekan lalu. Film ini mendapat apresiasi begitu tinggi dari para pengamat dan baru saja masuk dalam nominasi Golden Globe 2023 untuk kategori film animasi terbaik. Seberapa istimewakah film kisah klasik versi Del Toro ini?

Yes, you bring me joy, a terrible joy

Alur utama kisahnya masih mengikuti dongeng aslinya dengan menambah beberapa plot dan latar waktu kisah yang berbeda. Del Toro, kini membawa kisah Pinocchio berlatar Perang Dunia II dengan rezim Mussolini (fasisme) yang kala itu tengah di puncak keemasannya. Semua motif kisah bersinggungan dengan nuansa perang dan fasisme yang secara unik berelasi dengan alam roh, kehidupan pasca kematian. Del Toro menambahkan ini, tidak semata hanya untuk membuat kisahnya lebih gelap dan suram, namun justru lebih memiliki kedalaman. Ini jelas bukan lagi untuk konsumsi anak-anak, seperti peruntukan dongengnya.

Penikmat yang fasih dengan film sang sineas, tentu tahu persis, Del Toro tidak akan pernah membuat sosok karakter yang biasa. Semua berkebalikan dengan versi Disney-nya yang serba ceria dan optimis. Ia menyajikan dengan sisi berkebalikan, bahkan sebagian karakternya terlihat menyeramkan layaknya film horor. Jimmy Cricket yang divisualisasikan begitu manis oleh Disney, kini terlihat seperti sosok monster yang menakutkan. Semua serba gelap dan kelam, termasuk sosok Pinnochio serta sang peri yang digambarkan begitu menakutkan, serta sang monster laut (ikan paus di kisah aslinya). Semua senada dengan kisah alternatif yang ditawarkan sang sineas.

Del Toro’s Pinocchio mengubah kisah klasik Pinocchio menjadi satu pelajaran hidup penuh kepahitan dan makna, dengan stempel visualnya yang khas. Walau terasa agak canggung menonton di awal dengan segala pesimisme dan kesuraman kisahnya, namun berjalannya waktu, plotnya mulai menunjukkan power-nya. Film ini tidak hanya menyelipkan (mengolok) fasisme, horor perang, dan sisi ketamakan semata, namun bicara jauh soal eksistensi hidup, pengorbanan, dan cinta yang tulus. Pinnochio melampauinya dengan pengalaman pahit, bahkan melebihi Gepetto, atau siapapun di kisahnya. Walau secara visual, saya lebih suka Pan’s Labyrinth dan The Shape of Water, namun untuk kedalaman kisah dan nakahnya, rasanya ini adalah pencapaian terbaik sang sineas.
