Dreamkatcher adalah film horor garapan debutan Kerry Harris yang sebelumnya banyak menggarap film serial televisi. Film ini dibintangi beberapa nama tenar, seperti Radha Mitchell, Lin Shaye, serta Henry Thomas yang banyak dikenal melalui perannya sebagai Elliot dalam E.T., empat dekade silam. Dengan modal beberapa pemain yang sudah berpengalaman, namun anehnya, film ini tak mampu digarap dengan baik.

Alkisah Gail (Mitchell) diajak untuk berlibur di rumah pondok milik kekasihnya, Luke (Thomas) yang juga membawa sang putra, Josh. Josh rupanya masih trauma dengan kematian sang ibu yang tak wajar. Ia masih saja mimpi buruk bertemu sang ibu. Suatu ketika, Gail dan Josh, secara tak sengaja datang ke sebuah gudang tua milik Ruth yang menjual pernak-pernik bernuansa etnik. Josh diam-diam mengambil sebuah benda yang ia pikir bisa untuk menangkal mimpi buruknya. Sebaliknya, benda tersebut justru mengeluarkan iblis yang ada di dalamnya.

Oh my. Heran, pembuat film dengan modal cukup, rupanya masih bisa membuat film begini buruk. Ekpektasi sejak awal memang rendah, namun siapa sangka filmnya bisa seburuk ini. Film ini seperti tak lengkap, banyak adegan yang hilang, dialog seringkali terlalu kaku, dan terlihat sekali banyak adegan dibuat seadanya. Kisahnya pun sudah terlalu familiar. Sebuah keluarga mencari ketenangan di tempat terpencil, namun justru musibah yang mereka dapatkan. Tak ada yang baru di sini. Film ini juga tak punya konflik bawaan (latar masalah tokoh) yang cukup untuk bisa memberi kedalaman pada kisahnya. Ending-nya pun menggelikan.

Lin Shaye yang kita tahu sering bermain di genre ini, juga tak ada gregetnya. Siapa pun yang bermain sebagai sosok Ruth, efeknya tak banyak bedanya. Mitchell dan Shaye, bahkan si cilik, sama sekali tidak bermain buruk, namun dengan naskah seperti ini, apa mau dikata. Panorama bagus di banyak adegannya, termasuk rumah kabinnya juga tak mampu dimanfaatkan secara maksimal untuk membangun sisi horornya. Bahkan trik horornya saja sudah tak ada yang mengagetkan.

Dreamkatcher adalah sebuah horor yang setengah masak, gagal sebagai genrenya, dan membuang talenta para pemain seniornya. Tak disangka, film yang begitu mapan secara teknis, namun tak seimbang dengan naskahnya. Untuk berharap film ini bisa bersaing secara komersial dalam situasi normal adalah satu hal yang mustahil. Satu lagi yang mengganjal, poster resminya mungkin keliru dengan film lain karena tak ada satu elemen pun di sana, ada di filmnya. Untuk tujuan marketing, posternya bisa dibilang berhasil mengecoh calon penonton. Posternya jauh lebih baik dari filmnya.
