Satu lagi film live-action adaptasi atau remake film animasi Disney kini telah rilis, Dumbo, setelah sukses The Jungle Book dan Beauty and the Beast. Satu hal yang mengejutkan, Dumbo mengawali deretan film adaptasi animasi Disney tahun ini yang berlanjut dengan Alladin, The Lion King, dan Maleficent: Misstress of Evil. Total 4 film dalam setahun! Dumbo diarahkan oleh sineas kawakan eksentrik Tim Burton yang kita kenal dengan sentuhan ekspresionistiknya. Kini tanpa bintang andalannya (Johnny Depp), Burton rupanya bereuni dengan beberapa bintang regulernya, seperti Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, Eva Green, hingga Colin Farrel. Terakhir, Burton menggarap Miss Pregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (2016), dan rupanya sang sineas sama sekali tidak kehilangan sentuhannya.

Setelah sekian lama wajib militer, akhirnya Holt Ferrier kembali pulang ke rumahnya, sirkus keliling milik si tua Max Medici. Sirkus ini kini kehilangan pamornya setelah kehilangan para bintang aktraksinya, termasuk Hold dan mendiang istrinya. Bersama putra dan putrinya, Milly dan Joe, Holt yang kini tangannya cacat akhirnya mendapat pekerjaan untuk mengurus gajah betina hamil yang diharapkan Max, bayinya bakal menjadi atraksi barunya kelak. Sang betina akhirnya melahirkan seekor bayi gajah yang dianggap cacat karena memiliki kuping yang sangat lebar dan panjang. Tidak hingga Milly dan Joe, akhirnya mengetahui bahwa sang bayi rupanya bisa melayang dengan mengepakkan kupingnya yang panjang. Atraksi pun dimulai!

Bagi para fans Tim Burton rasanya bakal tahu persis, seperti apa film ini bakal disajikan secara visual. Sentuhan ekspresionis yang kelam memang menjadi stempel estetik semua karyanya, termasuk juga Dumbo. Ketrampilan sang sineas mengemas aspek mise-en-scene seolah tidak pernah ada habisnya. Semua elemennya, baik setting, properti, kostum, hingga tata cahaya semuanya adalah milik sang sineas. Sungguh mengesankan. Menonton Dumbo, seolah kita bernostalgia kembali dengan semua karya Burton, bahkan theme park modern milik Vandervere banyak memiliki kesamaan gaya atau tribute dengan film ekspresionis masterpiece, Metropolis (1927). Terakhir, tentu saja komposer reguler Burton, Danny Elfman, kembali memberikan sentuhan yang khas dengan ilustrasi musiknya. Dumbo adalah 100% milik Burton!

Seperti kebanyakan film-film Burton (minus Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, dan Sleepy Hollow, tentu saja), naskahnya masih saja tak imbang dengan kekuatan estetiknya. Dumbo boleh dibilang memiliki kisah yang terlalu singkat dan konflik yang terlalu sederhana. Ringkasnya cerita juga membuat kita tak mampu berempati penuh dengan tokoh-tokohnya sekalipun para pemain sudah bermain baik. Beberapa momen menyentuh memang tersaji, namun tak cukup kuat untuk mengangkat kisah filmnya secara keseluruhan. Alur plotnya tak memiliki energi yang cukup untuk membuat kisahnya yang sesungguhnya berpotensi menyentuh menjadi kurang menggigit, khususnya pada segmen klimaks.

Kekuatan magis Dumbo, sayangnya tidak terletak pada kisahnya yang terlalu pendek dan kurang memikat, namun pada pencapaian mise-en-scene sang maestro dengan sentuhan khasnya. Sejak Alice in Wonderland (2010), Burton memang tak lagi mampu menghasilkan film blockbuster. Masih menjadi tanda tanya besar, apakah Dumbo bisa menggebrak secara komersial? Sepertinya sulit mengingat beberapa film besar akan rilis setelah ini. Tapi kita tidak bicara seorang Tim Burton sekarang, namun adalah Walt Disney Studios. Studio film nomor satu di dunia saat ini, dan sejauh ini film live action adaptasi animasinya belum pernah gagal komersial. Kita lihat saja.
