Evil Dead Rise tercatat adalah seri kelima dari horor supernatural Evil Dead sejak The Evil Dead (1981), yang rilis empat dekade lalu. Setelah mencoba beberapa kali me-”remake” versi aslinya, kini para pembuat film melakukan sesuatu yang berbeda dengan kisahnya. Para pembuat dan pemain orisinalnya, Robert Tapert, Sam Raimi, dan Bruce Campbell masih pula terlibat dalam produksinya walau kini di bangku produser. Evil Dead Rise diarahkan dan ditulis oleh Lee Cronin dengan dibintangi nama-nama yang masih asing, sebut saja Lily Sullivan, Alisha Sutherland, Nell Fisher, Gabriel Echols, dan Morgan Davies. Lantas, bagaimana pencapaian seri kelimanya kali ini?

Beth (Sullivan) adalah seorang pemusik bermasalah yang kembali ke kota Los Angeles di mana kakaknya berada. Sang kakak, Ellie (Sutherland) rupanya juga tengah dalam masalah, yang tinggal bersama tiga anaknya, Bridget (Echols), Danny (Davies), dan si kecil Kass (Fisher). Malam itu, gempa besar melanda LA dan apartemen Ellie terguncang hebat. Danny menemukan sebuah retakan besar di lantai basement yang membawanya ke sebuah ruang rahasia berisi buku kuno dan rekaman piringan hitam. Ketika Danny memutarnya, mantra-mantra kuno membangkitkan kembali sang iblis dan merasuki sang Ellie. Teror pun dimulai!

Bagi yang akrab dengan seri Evil Dead pasti familiar benar dengan plot ini. Kisahnya secara sederhana berpindah dari kabin kecil di tengah hutan ke apartemen kumuh di kota LA. Siapa menyangka kisahnya kini bisa berjalan demikian efektif? Bahkan dalam beberapa hal, lebih baik dari versi aslinya. Tone kisahnya kini lebih serius ketimbang versi 1981 yang bernuansa komedi melalui polah sang aktor, Bruce Campbell dengan segala keunikan kemasan estetik sang sineas (Sam Raimi). Untuk sisi gore-nya, film ini masih sama level brutalnya walaupun terdapat karakter anak-anak dalam kisahnya.

Mirip seperti aslinya, plot film ini juga nyaris berjalan “real time” melalui teror non-stop sang ibu. Naskahnya begitu efektif dengan dominan hanya berlokasi dalam satu ruang apartemen. Sejak sang ibu kerasukan, plotnya tidak membuang-buang waktu dengan menyajikan aksi gore yg demikian brutal tanpa henti. Bak tukang jagal, sang iblis tidak pernah berlama-lama dengan korbannya yang menjadikan intensitas ketegangan cerita berjalan semakin tinggi hingga segmen klimaks. Aksi ekstrem brutal yang banjir darah disajikan nyaris di semua adegannya. Segmen klimaksnya tak luput pula memberi tribute khas serinya melalui aksi-aksi brutal melalui mesin gergaji listrik. Ending-nya pun secara cerdik memberi koneksi cerita dengan segmen pembuka film ini.

Evil Dead Rise adalah sebuah “reboot” segar serinya melalui tone serius, sederhana, dan efektif, yang terbaik sejak versi originalnya. Film ini juga lepas dari kemasan estetik Sam Raimi dengan segala gerakan kameranya yang ekstrem, sekalipun segmen pembuka, menggoda kita untuk sesaat. Penikmat dan fans Evil Dead rasanya bakal sangat terpuaskan dengan segala aksi dan kisahnya. Kisah Evil Dead Rise membuka luas bagi pengembangan kisah ke depannya dengan segala kemungkinan persilangan genre. So far, Evil Dead Rise adalah film horor terbaik tahun ini.
