When a boy's beloved dog passes away suddenly, he attempts to bring the animal back to life through a powerful science experiment.

Patut diacungi jempol, Tim Burton sejak awal hingga kini tetap mampu memberikan sentuhan gaya yang konsisten melalui tema dan kisah yang gelap dengan sentuhan ekpsresionistik-nya. Animasi stop motion juga bukan hal baru bagi Burton, tercatat The Nigthmare before Christmas dan Corps Bride. Frankenweenie diangkat dari film pendek “live action” berjudul sama tahun 1984 yang juga garapan Burton. Frankenweenie kisahnya kurang lebih sama dengan film pendeknya yang diadaptasi lepas dari cerita Frankenstein karya Mary Shelley. Victor Frankenstein adalah seorang bocah penyendiri yang juga seorang peneliti cilik. Victor memiliki seekor anjing bernama Sparky yang sangat ia sayangi. Suatu ketika Sparky tertabrak mobil kita sedang bermain dan tewas seketika. Victor yang tidak bisa menerima kenyataan mencoba melakukan eksperimen untuk menghidupkan kembali Sparky.

Siapapun yang telah melihat pendeknya pasti kisahnya kini tidak lagi memberikan kejutan yang berarti. Film panjangnya ini lebih terlihat seperti film pendeknya yang dipanjangkan dengan tambahan beberapa karakter baru seperti teman-teman sekelas Victor. Penokohan karakter selain karakter utama sama sekali tak tampak sehingga empati kita ke tokoh-tokoh lain nyaris tak ada. Kisahnya pun tidak sedramatik dan sehangat film pendeknya. Di film pendeknya, kita bisa ikut merasa khawatir jika Sparky sampai terlihat orang, dan pada sekuen klimaks kita juga bisa merasakan betul simpati para tetangga yang berubah terhadap Sparky setelah ia menyelamatkan Victor di menara kincir angin namun ini semua tidak tampak tidak di film panjangnya. Monster-monster yang dihidupkan oleh teman-teman sekelas Victor juga terlalu mudah motifnya dan jelas terlalu berlebihan, tanpa penyelesaian yang memadai atau konsekuensi dari perbuatan mereka.

Frankenweenie adalah semata hanya film personal Burton lainnya. Konsistensi gaya khususnya dari sisi kematangan pencapaian visualnya yang sangat artistik memang menjadi andalan sang sineas selama ini. Ilustrasi musik dari komposer tetapnya, Danny Elfman juga masih memberi warna tersendiri bagi film-filmnya. Masih ditunggu karya masterpiece sang sineas, setelah Ed Wood,Edward Scissorshand dan Sleepy Hollow pada dua dekade silam. Kelemahan Burton pada beberapa film terakhirnya seperti Alice in Wonderland dan Dark Shadows memang terletak pada pengembangan plotnya. Sang sineas seolah bersenang-senang dengan dirinya sendiri di film-film ini tanpa memperdulikan penonton. Jika Burton tidak ingin membuat jenuh para penggemarnya, ia harus melakukan sebuah terobosan baru, tanpa harus melepas ciri khasnya.
