A group of friends who meet regularly for game nights find themselves entangled in a real-life mystery when the shady brother of one of them is seemingly kidnapped by dangerous gangsters.

     Agak mengejutkan juga ketika mengetahui Game Night ternyata rilis di sini, hanya telat seminggu dari rilis negara asalnya. Dari trailer-nya, jelas tampak jika film ini bukan selera kebanyakan penonton kita. Ini terbukti untuk pertama kalinya dalam sejarah saya menonton film barat yang baru rilis di kota Jogja hanya ada dua orang penonton saja, dan esok harinya hanya bersisa dua jam pemutaran saja. Game Night sendiri bukan film yang buruk. Film ini banyak mengingatkan saya pada The Game garapan sineas kawakan David Fincher, hanya saja berbeda genre dan tentu saja kualitas filmnya. Game Night adalah film komedi Hollywood kebanyakan hanya saja premisnya amat menarik. Sekelompok sahabat yang tengah berkumpul dan suka dengan permainan tebak-tebakan, terjebak dalam satu permainan yang telah di-skenario oleh salah satu dari mereka, dan seperti sudah kita duga ternyata permainan tersebut berubah menjadi satu aksi kriminal berbahaya yang sungguhan terjadi.

     Satu kelebihan Game Night jelas ada pada penampilan kastingnya. Jason Bateman (Max) dan Rachel McAdams (Annie) sudah mencuri perhatian sejak awal, berbekal satu sajian montage berisi latar belakang kedekatan mereka yang terjalin manis. Banyolan luar biasa konyol menjadi menu utamanya dan para kastingnya mampu berkolaborasi dengan sangat baik. Kita bisa jatuh hati dengan tokoh-tokoh ini melalui karakter-karakternya yang unik, serta tentu polah dan celotehan mereka. Dari trailer-nya pun rasanya sudah cukup menggambarkan hal ini. Mereka membuat film ini begitu menghibur walau hanya didukung kisah yang memang standar untuk genrenya. Genrenya sendiri yang menjadi penyebab ritme ketegangan cerita menjadi hilang karena kita tahu, sesuatu tak akan terjadi pada mereka, seberapapun hebat twist filmnya. Sayang sebenarnya, karena sejak awal premis filmnya berjalan begitu menarik.

     Para penikmat film sejati rasanya bakal menyukai banyolan-banyolannya karena lebih dari separuhnya terkait dengan dunia film, entah itu cerita, bintang, adegan, kutipan dialog, dan sebagainya. Saya tertawa geli ketika Annie menirukan gaya perampokan kafe dalam Pulp Fiction, hanya sayang mengapa mereka harus menyebut judul filmnya. Walau kadang banyolannya memang terlalu berlebihan tapi tetap saja kita mampu tertawa geli dengan polah-polah mereka. Nuansa game sendiri juga sudah tampak sejak awal film, bahkan hingga beberapa shot-nya pun terasa seperti sebuah game, contohnya saja adegan aksi kejar-mengejar mobil. Lumayan segar dan mengasyikan.

     Game Night menawarkan sebuah komedi konyol dengan para kasting yang menarik, hanya saja tak banyak yang ditawarkan dari kisahnya. Duo sineas John Francis Daley dan Jonathan Goldstein memang sudah akrab dengan film-film komedi sejenis melalui debut mereka, Vacation. Walau film ini tak begitu sukses, baik kritik maupun komersial, namun mengejutkan juga ketika mengetahui mereka bakal menggarap film superhero solo Flash (DC Extended Universe), Flashpoint. Bagi para penikmat film tak ada salahnya menonton Game Night untuk sekedar menikmati banyolannya sebelum film ini turun layar.
