Geostorm adalah film bencana – fiksi ilmiah garapan debutan Dean Devlin yang selama ini biasa menjadi produser film-film populer bergenre sejenis, macam Independence Day, Godzilla (1998), hingga baru lalu Independence Day: Resurgence. Film ini dibintangi Gerard Butler, Abbie Cornish, Jim Sturgess, Ed Harris, hingga Andy Garcia. Setelah film-film bencana besar sudah lewat masanya, Geostorm yang konon sudah sejak tahun 2014 lalu diproduksi, mencoba peruntungannya di rilis pasca musim panas tahun ini.

Alam yang semakin tidak bersahabat membuat umat manusia bersama-sama membangun sebuah satelit canggih yang mampu mengontrol cuaca. Jake Lawson yang menciptakan alat ini justru malah dipecat karena aksinya selalu diluar prosedur. Tiga tahun kemudian, sebuah anomali terjadi pada satelit tersebut yang menyebabkan bencana tak wajar di beberapa lokasi di bumi. Jake lalu dipanggil kembali untuk mengatasi masalah yang diprediksi bisa mengakibatkan sebuah bencana maha hebat di muka bumi yang diistilahkan geostorm.

Sejak menonton trailer-nya, film ini sudah tidak terlihat meyakinkan, dan nyatanya memang begitu. Tidak ada kejutan baik secara cerita maupun visual. Semua aksi besar sudah ada di trailer-nya. Kisah yang terlalu absurd dan mudah sekali diprediksi membuatnya segalanya menjadi amat membosankan. Kisah filmnya terlalu luas sehingga plot terlalu tanggung untuk lebih condong ke drama dan aksi, walau sebenarnya plot investigasi menarik untuk dieksplor lebih jauh. Lubang plot terlalu banyak dan intrik yang dibangun pun terlalu mudah diantisipasi sehingga unsur ketegangan menjadi minim. Saya mencoba untuk berpikir nalar. Coba bayangkan, umat manusia bisa membangun stasiun raksasa angkasa sedemikian besar dengan ribuan satelitnya yang mengelilingi bumi, namun mereka hanya berpikir untuk mengontrol cuaca ekstrem?

Geostorm dengan segala hingar-bingarnya adalah bencana bagi film dan genrenya. Dengan segala aksinya serta CGI yang medioker tidak banyak yang ditawarkan secara visual. Film bencana berskala global macam ini rasanya sudah sulit untuk mencari celah baru. Sejak The Day After Tomorrow (2004) rasanya belum ada film bencana yang mampu berimbang antara drama, aksi serta pencapaian visual, dan penonton pun bisa terlibat secara emosional ke dalam tiap karakternya. Genre bencana selalu memiliki misi dan pesan bagus untuk umat manusia dan bagaimana kita seharusnya bijak merawat bumi. Masih kita tunggu film bencana berkualitas di masa mendatang walau saya agak pesimis.
