Following a ghost invasion of Manhattan, paranormal enthusiasts Erin Gilbert and Abby Yates, nuclear engineer Jillian Holtzmann, and subway worker Patty Tolan band together to stop the otherworldly threat.

Ghosbusters pada era 80-an adalah sebuah ikon sinema populer lengkap dengan lagu hitsnya, Ghosbusters. Film pertama dirilis tahun 1984 dan sekuelnya, Ghostbusters II rilis tahun 1989, dan keduanya digarap oleh sineas komedi kondang, Ivan Reitman. Remake atau banyak diangggap reboot kali ini menampilkan satu hal yang sama sekali berbeda pada empat karakter utamanya, yakni perempuan. Hal ini sempat menuai protes keras dari fansnya.

Paul Feig sebagai sutradara spesialis komedi menampilkan aktris regulernya, Melissa mcCarthy. Plotnya jelas berbeda dengan aslinya namun intinya kurang lebih sama, berkisah empat sekawan yang menawarkan jasa menangkap hantu. Fenomena arwah gentayangan ini dipicu oleh satu sosok jahat, Rowan yang ingin membuka portal dari dimensi arwah dan ia bisa menjadi penguasa kota. Ghosbusters harus mencegah Rowan sebelum ia menghancurkan seisi kota.

Problem remake adalah selalu dibandingkan dengan film aslinya. Remake mestinya menampilkan sesuatu hal baru, lebih segar, lebih seru, dan lebih segala-galanya dari film aslinya.  Apa yang ditawarkan remake-nya ini tidak banyak hal yang baru, empat karakter wanitanya tidak memiliki karisma yang dimiliki empat karakter pria dalam film aslinya. Feig yang selama ini kita kenal dengan komedi verbalnya juga tidak mampu berbuat banyak di film ini. Humor-humornya garing, dialognya datar, hanya sesekali aksi lucu terkadang mengundang tawa. McCarthy yang biasanya tampil garang dan urakan, kini tidak mengobral omongan ngawur seperti biasanya. Satu lagi yang menganggu, karakter wajah Chris Hemsworth sebagai Kevin sang sekretaris, sama sekali tidak tampak dungu dan memaksa sekali, berbeda dengan karakter wajah Rick Moranis di film aslinya.

Satu hal menarik dalam film ini adalah nuansa nostalgia filmnya. Tokoh-tokoh utama film aslinya hampir semua kembali muncul di film ini sebagai cameo, seperti Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, serta Sigourney Weaver. Logo Ghosbusters yang sangat ikonik juga membawa nuansa film lawasnya ke film ini. Tentunya yang paling nuansa kuat adalah irama dan hentakan lagu “Ghosbusters” yang memang amat sangat populer di masanya. Semuanya hanya sebatas sensasi nostalgia saja, tanpa bisa menyatu dengan kisah dan alur filmnya.

Ghostbusters versi remake perempuan ini tidak menawarkan banyak hal baru dari film aslinya selain nuansa nostalgia serta efek visual yang terlalu kuno untuk penonton masa kini. Jika saja film ini adalah sekuel film-film pendahulunya sepertinya film ini lebih menarik. Toh para pemain tokoh-tokoh utama dari film aslinya juga bisa muncul, mengapa tidak? Sungguh mengherankan. Sekuelnya konon sudah mendapat lampu hijau dari pihak Sony, kita lihat apakah performa box officenya sebaik ekspektasinya.
