   Sudah terlalu banyak film komedi kriminal sejenis, Gringo jelas bukan salah satu yang terbaik. Gringo digarap oleh Nash Edgerton, sineas asal Australia yang merupakan adik dari aktor Joel Edgerton, yang juga bermain dalam film ini. Karir sang sineas didominasi karirnya sebagai stuntman dari seri Star Wars hingga The Matrix. Ia beberapa kali menggarap film pendek serta video klip, dan debut film panjangnya adalah The Square (2008) yang dipuji para kritikus. Pengalamannya ini, rupanya tidak mampu mengangkat Gringo yang dibintangi aktor-aktris papan atas macam Charlize Theron, David Oyelowo, Sharlto Copley, Joel Edgerton, Thandie Newton, hingga Amanda Seyfried.

     Harold Soyinka tengah galau dalam karirnya di tengah isu merger perusahaannya yang dipimpin Richard Rusk yang juga teman dekatnya, serta partner-nya Elaine Markinson. Harold bertambah galau ketika sang istri meninggalkannya untuk laki-laki lain. Suatu ketika, dua bosnya mengajaknya pergi ke Meksiko untuk mengecek pabrik mereka di sana untuk mengembangkan satu pil medik yang berisi “mariyuana”. Harold yang frustasi, akhirnya memilih ide gila untuk membuat skenario dirinya diculik untuk meminta tebusan besar. Situasi justru berkembang semakin rumit, ketika seorang gembong narkoba yang dijuluki Black Panther, keliru menangkap Harold sebagai bos perusahaan milik Richard.

     Plotnya terlihat rumit? Tidak juga. Bahkan filmnya mudah sekali diantisipasi alur kisahnya karena formula plot sejenis sudah terlalu sering digunakan. Kejutan-kejutan cerita yang semestinya memberi greget tidak tampak menggigit. Filmnya terlalu hambar dengan tempo plot yang terlalu lambat untuk genrenya. Ide naskahnya sebenarnya cukup baik, hanya saja sang sineas tidak mampu mengemasnya lebih dinamis. Penonton tidak butuh obrolan-obrolan panjang yang “sepi” dengan dialog yang tak perlu dan tak cerdas. Lelucon dialog pun menjadi hambar karena mudah sekali diantisipasi. Beberapa karakter pun tampak tak banyak berperan penting dalam plotnya. Para pemain senior yang sudah mencoba bermain total pun, khususnya Theron dan Oyelowo, tak terasa bermain menggigit. Coba saja tonton trailer-nya, ini masih jauh lebih baik dari filmnya.

     Gringo adalah komedi kriminal tipikal yang membuang semua talenta para pemain papan atasnya melalui gaya penyutradaraan yang tak berkelas. Gringo adalah satu film komedi yang gagal, baik dari kemasan maupun kisahnya. Teramat jauh jika membandingkan dengan komedi sejenis macam seri The Hangover atau bahkan Game Night yang baru rilis beberapa waktu lalu. Berbeda dengan sang kakak yang sukses kritik dengan film thriller garapannya, The Gift, Nash rasanya harus memilih jalan lain untuk karirnya.
