Robert Langdon must stop a madman from unleashing a virus that could kill half of the population.

Inferno adalah seri ketiga petualangan Robert Langdon setelah The Da Vinci Code dan Angels & Demons yang diadaptasi novel laris karya Dan Brown. Sineas kawakan Ron Howard serta aktor Tom Hanks kembali berkolaborasi. Konon filmnya sendiri sebenarnya dijadwalkan rilis akhir tahun lalu namun karena berbenturan dengan Star Wars: Force Awakens, Inferno diundur hingga oktober tahun ini. Kisah film ini sudah bisa kita baca melalui trailer-nya. Langdon kini harus berurusan dengan satu komplotan yang ingin menghancurkan umat manusia melalui virus mematikan. Dengan berbekal pengetahuan sebagai ahli simbol, bersama Dr. Sienna, Langdon harus memecahkan teka-teki besar ini dalam waktu yang amat terbatas.

Awal filmnya menjanjikan sesuatu yang amat menarik ketika Langdon bangun di sebuah rumah sakit, kehilangan memori dan menghadapi situasi yang membahayakan nyawanya. Misteri demi misteri terus disajikan ke penonton tanpa kita sendiri tahu apa yang terjadi (kecuali yang sudah membaca novel tentunya). Penonton yang jeli sejak awal pasti sudah bisa merasakan kejanggalan karakter Dr. Sienna karena tokoh ini masuk ke dalam cerita terlalu cepat. Teka-teki dan misteri yang menjadi kekuatan cerita dua film sebelumnya justru kali ini menjadi kelemahan besar. Informasi demi informasi masuk begitu cepat dan tak mudah dicerna begitu saja membuat kita amat lelah menonton. Kita sudah tahu apa yang terjadi di akhir cerita hanya prosesnya tidak mampu membuat penonton merasa tertantang untuk berpikir. Semua lewat begitu saja tanpa kejutan berarti.

  Dibandingkan dengan dua film sebelumnya seperti ada yang hilang dalam film ini. Da Vinci dan Demon mampu menampilkan shot-shot megah dan elegan yang mampu menyatu dengan plotnya yang penuh dengan misteri dan teka-teki. Kita seolah dibawa berjalan-jalan menikmati suasana eksotis kota-kota tua sepanjang filmnya. Inferno kini justru sebaliknya dan tampak secara teknis menggunakan gaya dan tone film independen yang lebih terkesan “murah”. Bisa jadi bujet produksi menjadi biang keladinya, Inferno kurang lebih hanya separuh bujet dua film sebelumnya. Rasanya Ini yang membuat perbedaan besar tampilan dua film sebelumnya.

Inferno kehilangan unsur misteri, ketegangan, dan roh dua film sebelumnya. Tak ada yang salah dengan Tom Hanks hanya kali ini ada sesuatu yang hilang disini. Penonton yang sudah membaca novelnya jelas bisa mengikuti jalan kisah film ini lebih baik tanpa harus kebingungan. Da Vinci dan Demon masih enak dinikmati plotnya sekalipun kita tidak membaca novelnya. Sisi kontroversi yang menjadi nilai jual dua film sebelumnya kini tak lagi menggigit. Bujet serta jadwal rilis oktober dan diundur hingga hampir satu tahun sepertinya sudah menjadi gelagat bahwa pihak studio sendiri sudah melihat potensi film ini yang kalah pamor dengan dua film sebelumnya.
