John Carter diadaptasi dari seri pertama seri novel populer “Barsoom”, yakni  A Princess of Mars (1917).  Total novelnya ada 11 buah yang sebagian besar mengisahkan tentang petualangan John Carter di planet Mars (Barsoom). Film fantasi petualangan ini berlatar cerita tahun 1868 tentang seorang pria penggali emas asal Virginia, AS, bernama John Carter yang secara tak sengaja terdampar ke planet Mars. Gravitasi Mars yang lebih ringan menyebabkan Carter bisa melompat sangat tinggi dan kuat secara fisik. Carter terjebak di antara konflik skala besar di antara suku-suku yang ada di sana. Carter dipuja bak dewa dan dijuluki Dotar Sojat. Di lain pihak ia sendiri juga harus mencari jalan untuk pulang ke bumi.
Seperti film fantasi dan fiksi ilmiah lazimnya, film ini juga kaya akan efek visual. Film ini jelas lebih baik ditonton dalam format 3D ketimbang 2D. Gambarnya benar-benar hidup, meyakinkan, dan sangat memanjakan mata terutama segmen di Mars. Nyaris sulit dibedakan antara rekayasa digital dengan live action, baik setting, karakter, pesawat, dan sebagainya karena semua gambarnya benar-benar menyatu. Sejauh ini rasanya John Carter adalah pencapaian efek visual (CGI) terbaik yang pernah ada. Bujet $250 juta benar-benar terbayar.
Menonton film ini mengingatkan pada film-film sejenis yakni, Time Machine dan Star Wars: Attack of The Clone. Film-film ini juga sangat kaya efek visual namun entah mengapa kita kehilangan sesuatu sewaktu menonton hingga kita tidak mampu menyatu dengan filmnya. Entah plotnya berjalan terlalu cepat, kurangnya penokohan, atau bisa pula karena gambarnya yang terlalu artifisial, entah apa pun itu yang jelas kita sulit peduli dengan karakter-karakternya. Singkatnya, John Carter seolah tak punya jiwa. Durasi film untuk kisah sebesar ini rasanya kurang lama.
John Carter hanya semata menawarkan keindahan visual. Kisahnya rasanya terlalu “old fashion” untuk penonton masa kini, sama kasusnya seperti film animasi Tintin baru lalu. Membuat film fantasi atau fiksi ilmiah sebesar ini memang tidak mudah namun faktanya banyak yang film berhasil, seperti film medioker, The Chronicles of Riddick, sekalipun artifisial namun karakter Riddick mampu menghidupkan filmnya.  Jika sukses, sekuelnya telah menanti, dengan potensi hingga sepuluh film lagi. Kita hanya berharap sekuelnya bisa lebih baik dari ini.
