Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008) merupakan film fantasi-petualangan yang diproduksi khusus untuk konsumsi bioskop dengan fasilitas 3-D. Cerita filmnya didasarkan atas novel populer karya Jules Verne yang sebelumnya juga telah beberapa kali diadaptasi baik ke layar lebar maupun televisi. Film arahan Eric Brevig ini dibintangi oleh Brendan Fraser, Josh Hutcherson, serta Anita Briem.

Alkisah seorang ilmuwan Trevor Anderson (Fraser) mendapat petunjuk keberadaan kakaknya yang menghilang ketika menyelidiki sebuah gunung api. Bersama Sean (Hutcherson), putra kakaknya, Trevor memutuskan pergi ke pegunungan di wilayah utara Eropa (Islandia) untuk mencari kakaknya. Disana mereka didampingi oleh gadis pendaki lokal, Hannah untuk mengawali sebuah petualangan tak terlupakan jauh di dasar bumi.

Plotnya yang sederhana dengan tempo cepat berpacu dengan waktu semata-mata hanya untuk mendukung semua aksi dalam filmnya yang menggunakan efek 3-D. Film ini hanyalah merupakan pertunjukan visual belaka yang sama sekali tidak menitikberatkan pada kualitas cerita. Penonton dibawa ke sebuah dunia yang tidak akan pernah dibayangkan sebelumnya. Setting yang begitu menakutkan serta nuansa mencekam senantiasa melingkupi kita serasa mengalami mimpi buruk. Samudera, jurang, gurun pasir yang seolah tanpa ujung, hawa panas yang menyengat, warna “langit” yang aneh, fauna dan flora yang tidak bersahabat, serta suara gemuruh yang senantiasa terdengar, membuat kita serasa di “neraka” dan ingin cepat-cepat meninggalkan tempat tersebut. Wow.. tidak dapat kita bayangkan bagaimana rasanya jika melihat semua ini di bioskop 3-D, pasti sangat menakjubkan.

Untuk tontonan bioskop biasa (non 3-D), film ini tak ubahnya seperti film aksi-petualangan kelas B. Kualitas dan warna gambarnya tampak seperti menggunakan format digital, sepertinya karena penggunaan kamera khusus (3-D). Seluruh adegan aksinya juga kurang menggigit, utamanya jelas karena efek tiga dimensi yang hilang. Aksi “roller coaster ride” dalam tambang, jatuh ke dasar bumi, meloncati batu-batu terapung, kejar-mengejar dengan T-Rex memang cukup menegangkan namun tampak sekali seperti ada sesuatu yang hilang. Sia-sia jika Anda menonton film ini di bioskop biasa. Segala sesuatu yang semestinya menjadi nilai lebih filmnya tidak bakal Anda temui disini. Film ini hanyalah khusus untuk tontonan bioskop 3-D! Satu hal lagi, jika film ini dikatakan film anak-anak rasanya juga kurang tepat, karena banyak bagian dalam film ini sepertinya terlalu menakutkan bagi penonton anak-anak, terutama usia dibawah 10 tahun.
