Kandahar adalah film aksi thriller arahan Ric Roman Waugh yang dibintangi aktor laga kawakan, Gerard Butler. Beberapa bulan lalu, sineas Guy Ritchie juga merilis filmnya The Covenant yang kisah dan setting-nya senada. Dengan sedikit bersinggungan dengan genre spionase serta karisma sang bintang, mampukah Kandahar bersaing dengan film-film tipikalnya?

Seorang agen lapangan CIA, Tom Harris (Butler) sukses menjalankan misi besarnya, yakni menghancurkan fasilitas nuklir rahasia milik Iran. Iran yang kehilangan muka berusaha keras mencari pihak yang bertanggung jawab atas kejadian ini. Satu informasi bocor menyebabkan identitas Tom terkuak, dan kini semua pihak mengincarnya. Tom tengah berada di Herat, Afganistan, untuk menjalankan misi lainnya ketika mendapat info tersebut. Bersama seorang agen lokal bernama Mo (Navid Negahban), mereka harus segera ke Kandahar yang berjarak 400 mil untuk bisa mendapatkan bantuan. Sepanjang perjalanan, pasukan khusus Iran, Pakistan, hingga pihak Taliban, ISIS, serta banyak lainnya memburu mereka dengan menggebu.

Kisah film yang diawali dengan tempo lambat memberi gelagat kuat, aksi-aksi heboh setelahnya. Benar saja, sejak perpindahan cerita ke babak kedua, kisahnya bergerak nonstop menyajikan aksi tanpa henti. Sisi ketegangan bekerja maksimal dan ancaman pun terasa nyata. Aksi pengejaran, tembak-menembak, dan ledakan bom mendominasi segmen aksinya. Hanya saja, aksi-aksinya menghindari area padat penduduk, alhasil hanya memberi sajian latar padang gurun dan perbukitan tandus. Ini membuat greget aksinya menjadi sedikit menurun. Sekali pun aksi klimaksnya ditutup dengan pengejaran yang intens serta pemboman besar-besaran.

Kandahar menawarkan aksi ketegangan tinggi, walau eksekusinya kurang menggigit. Sang bintang dengan pesonanya, seperti biasa, mampu memberikan penampilan maksimal pun demikian dengan pendampingnya Negahban sebagai Mo. Terdapat sentuhan humanis dalam beberapa adegannya di tengah gemerlap aksinya. Seperti halnya The Covenant, film-film tipikal “anti perang” macam ini, mencoba menggali sisi dilema moral yang menjadi isu seksi yang diangkat. Jika mau membandingkan dengan film-film anti perang klasik, jelas terlampau jauh. Film-film ini masih terlalu tanggung untuk menyajikan pesan mulianya di tengah desingan peluru, ledakan bom, dan semua masalah yang dibuat oleh AS sendiri.
