A boy who has a bad Christmas accidentally summons a festive demon to his family home.

Horor fantasi anak sejenis sepertinya sudah lama tidak kita lihat di layar bioskop, sebut saja yang populer The Grinch (2000), yang dibintangi Jim Carrey. Namun berbeda dengan The Grinch yang penuh dengan efek visual, Krampus mewakili horor tradisional macam Gremlins dan Critters dengan monster-monster non CGI-nya. Krampus diambil dari cerita turun temurun Jerman yang merupakan sosok monster mirip kambing kebalikan dari sosok Santa Clause. Alkisah pada menjelang natal, keluarga Tom dan Sarah bersama dua anaknya, Beth dan Max berkumpul dengan sanak famili mereka, ibu Tom, adik Sarah dan keluarganya, serta bibinya yang semuanya saling tidak akur. Masalah demi masalah terjadi hingga Max akhirnya menyobek surat yang ia buat untuk Santa. Mendadak badai muncul dan teror dari sosok monster aneh mulai menimpa mereka.

Kisahnya sederhana berjalan cepat dan menerus tanpa ada jeda hari bahkan jam. Nuansa hangat keluarga dengan cepat berubah menjadi teror. Layaknya film aliens, teror menjadi menu utama sepanjang filmnya, cukup efektif namun tidak mengejutkan. Sosok-sosok monster cukup bisa membuat penonton anak-anak takut namun jelas tidak untuk penonton dewasa. Nenek Max, Omi yang asal Jerman menjadi jembatan antara penonton dan filmnya melalui kisah asal usul Krampus yang disajikan dengan menarik dengan teknik animasi. Pesan moralnya jelas dan lugas tapi ending filmnya seperti terlalu gelap untuk ukuran anak-anak.

Jika Anda sudah melihat Critters atau seri Gremlins pasti sudah bisa mendapat gambaran tentang film ini. Teror berjalan efektif dan lebih mengerikan jika sosok monsternya tak tampak melainkan hanya melalui efek suara. Tidak ada adegan yang berkesan sama sekali kecuali ketika penonton bersua untuk pertama kali dengan Krampus. Entah di era CGI macam sekarang apakah   penonton anak-anak dan remaja masih bisa menikmati hidangan monster-monster boneka macam ini? Beberapa momen memang cukup menegangkan namun tone komedi justru mengurangi efek horor filmnya.

Krampus adalah sebuah horor tradisional non efek visual yang dikemas sederhana namun cukup efektif membangun nuansa terornya didukung kasting dari segala usia yang bermain baik. Namun apakah jenis horor seperti ini masih menjadi selera penonton masa kini masih menjadi pertanyaan besar. Hal yang menarik, Krampus menjadi simbol tidak adanya lagi harapan serta rasa kasih sayang dan saling memberi di antara manusia. Krampus ibarat malaikat maut menghukum dan mengambil jiwa siapa pun yang telah kehilangan esensi ini semua. Dari sudut pandang Krampus manusia hanya hidup dalam dunia mereka masing-masing yang penuh kepalsuan dan kemunafikan.
