Seperti sudah diperkirakan sebelumnya film musikal La La Land bakal mendominasi perolehan nominasi Piala Oscar dalam ajang Academy Awards tahun ini. Namun sungguh di luar dugaan La La Land meraih 14 nominasi yang merupakan jumlah nominasi terbanyak yang pernah diraih dalam ajang ini. Jumlah ini menyamai rekor perolehan nonimasi Oscar yang diraih oleh Titanic (1997) dan All About Eve (1950). Sementara jauh dibelakang Moonlight dan Arrival sama-sama meraih 8 nominasi, Hacksaw Ridge dan Lion meraih 6 nominasi, Manchester by the Sea meraih 5 nominasi, lalu Fences dan Hell of High Water meraih 4 nominasi.
