Genre gangster-kriminal rupanya masih belum redup pada dekade ini, sebut saja macam Lawless dan The Gangster Squad. Walau jauh dari istimewa namun setidaknya masih memberi harapan bagi genre ini untuk terus berkembang. Sementara aktor top Ben Affleck sendiri sejak debut sutradaranya melalui Gone Baby Gone selalu memproduksi film-film bernuansa kriminal, yakni The Town, Argo, dan kini film gangster Live by Night. Ketiga film Affleck sebelumnya amat diapresiasi tinggi baik kritikus maupun pasar bahkan Argo meraih tiga Piala Oscar termasuk film terbaik. Live by Night muncul dengan ekspektasi tinggi dimana lagi-lagi Affleck juga menyutradarai, menulis naskah, dan bermain di film ini.

Joe Coughlin adalah putra dari seorang kapten polisi di Boston. Berbeda dengan ayahnya darah kriminal mengalir dalam dirinya. Ia beberapa kali merampok bank dan juga berhubungan dengan Emma, wanita yang juga merupakan kekasih bos gangster, Albert White. Suatu ketika Joe dikhianati Emma hingga ia nyaris tewas oleh Albert sebelum diselamatkan ayahnya. Joe lalu dipenjara karena aksi terakhirnya dan ketika keluar ia memutuskan untuk membalas dendam dengan bekerja pada bos gangster pesaing Albert, Maso.

Untuk film gangster yang kisahnya diadaptasi dari novel boleh dibilang kisah filmnya terlalu datar dan amat membosankan. Naskah yang ditulis Affleck tidak menggambarkan sebuah kisah dengan tensi dramatik yang sama sekali menarik dan sangat jauh berbeda dengan film-filmnya sebelumnya. Setiap kali kisah seakan berjalan maju seketika itu pula tensi dramatik dipukul turun kembali. Fokus plotnya tak jelas ingin mengarah kemana, balas dendam, roman, atau bagaimana Joe mengelola bisnisnya hingga menjadi gangster kelas kakap, atau semuanya? Semua serba tanggung. Penonton seolah baru terbangun pada ¼ akhir cerita dimana aksi tembak menembak mulai terjadi. Secara umum alur kisahnya tidak banyak menawarkan konflik yang mampu menggugah penonton untuk mengikuti kisahnya.

Secara teknis tidak ada yang bisa dikomentari lebih jauh. Naskah yang demikian buruk berefek pada penampilan medioker aktor-aktrisnya padahal sebagian diantaranya terbilang senior termasuk sang aktor sendiri. Adegan aksi nyaris tidak ada yang menarik dan tidak ada yang belum pernah kita lihat sebelumnya. Tone warna filmnya juga tidak mampu mengangkat filmnya bahkan membuat semuanya serba artifisial. Semua yang tampak di layar terlihat sekali merupakan settingan yang jauh dari natural.

Terlalu banyak film-film gangster medioker dalam satu dekade terakhir dan Live by Night berada jauh sekali dibawah mereka. Entah apa yang dipikirkan Ben Affleck ketika ia memproduksi film seburuk ini yang sangat jauh dari pencapaian film-filmnya sebelumnya. Entah apa yang terjadi dengan sang sineas/aktor? Bisa jadi ia terlalu lelah bermain sebagai superhero DC yang sangat menguras pikiran dan tenaganya dalam beberapa tahun terakhir dan ke depan.
