Sineas peraih Oscar, Bong Joon-ho kembali melalui film komedi sci-fi Mickey 17. Bong, seperti kita tahu adalah sineas di balik film-film berkualitas tinggi, macam Memories of Murder, Mother, Snowpiecer, Okja, serta Parasite. Mickey 17 diadaptasi dari novel Mickey7 karya Edward Ashton. Film ini dibintangi oleh beberapa nama besar, yakni Robert Pattinson, Mark Rufallo, Tonny Collete, Steven Yuen, serta Naomi Ackie. Akankah film terbaru sang sineas masih memiliki level kualitas yang sama dengan karya-karya sebelumnya?

Jauh di masa depan, koloni di planet nun jauh di sana telah dimungkinkan. Mickey Burns (Pattinson) mendaftar seorang menjadi pekerja clone di planet Nifheim yang digagas oleh seorang politikus ternama, Kenneth Marshall (Ruffalo) dan istrinya Ylfa (Collete). Entah disadarinya atau tidak, Mickey rupanya menjadi pekerja yang bisa dikorbankan. Ketika ia tewas dalam pekerjaan, seketika itu pula clone barunya di”cetak” ulang bersama memori terakhirnya. Waktu berjalan dan Mickey pun telah berulang kali tewas dan dicetak ulang hingga 17 kali. Suatu ketika, Mickey-17 mendapat sebuah misi dan diduga tewas akibat hewan asing yang merupakan habitat asli Planet Nifheim. Mickey-18 pun dicetak tapi siapa menyangka Mickey-17 rupanya masih hidup yang ini membahayakan eksistensi keduanya.

Seperti ekspektasi, Bong kembali mengangkat kisah tentang kesenjangan sosial, bagaimana kalangan penguasa hidup di atas penderitaan kaum bawah, seperti tampak dalam Snowpiercer, Okja, hingga Parasite. Kali ini “kasta” terbawah diwakili oleh sosok cloning yang diperlakukan semena-mena dan tidak berperikemanusiaan. Mickey dikorbankan untuk menjadi uji coba banyak hal, seperti efek radiasi, tes makanan, hingga aktivitas yang beresiko tinggi lainnya. Teknik montage berkelas disajikan dengan ringkas dan padat, menggambarkan cloning demi cloning yang tewas dan dicetak berulang kali hingga nomor 17. Senada dengan Okja, kali ini kisahnya juga menggunakan “binatang” lokal sebagai ras tertindas akibat kerakusan penguasa. Bong menyajikan plotnya dengan gaya berkelas dan selera humor tinggi sepanjang filmnya. Seperti tradisi film-film garapan Bong, resolusi memuaskan menghiasi ending-nya.

Bong Joon-ho konsisten dengan konsep dan tema favoritnya dengan dukungan kuat penampilan kastingnya, walau Mickey 17 terhitung bukan tontonan sci-fi bagi awam. Ini adalah sebuah peran baru bagi Pattinson yang bermain dalam multiple role sebagai pembuktian ia adalah aktor serba bisa. Sementara bagi Bong ini adalah pembuktian talentanya yang berkelas walau Mickey 17 jelas masih di bawah masterpiece-nya, Parasite. Gelagat sudah terasa ketika film ini hanya ditayangkan di teater-teater kecil, dan rasanya memang, Mickey 17 bukan film yang mudah dicerna penonton awam. Bagi para fans sang sineas, ini jelas adalah sesuatu yang layak ditunggu. Dibandingkan karya-karya sebelumnya, Mickey 17 tercatat adalah salah satu karyanya yang menghibur.
