Setelah di awal tahun lalu memproduseri Alice Through the Looking Glasses kini Tim Burton merilis film garapannya, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children yang diambil dari novel fantasi laris berjudul sama. Tim Burton kita kenal dengan gayanya yang khas dengan sentuhan ekspresionistik. Dalam film fantasinya kali ini Burton melakukan pendekatan visual yang sama dengan mengingatkan pada film-film uniknya seperti Edward Scissorshand dan Big Fish.

Alkisah ketika sang kakek meninggal misterius, Jake bersama sang ayah pergi ke sebuah pulau kecil di Wales tempat asal usul kakeknya. Ketika menyelidiki sebuah rumah tua tempat sang kakek, Jake bertemu dengan sekelompok anak-anak misterius yang membawanya ke sebuah dunia paralel di masa lalu. Jake lalu bertemu dengan Miss Peregrine yang mengasuh anak-anak berkemampuan aneh dan ia akhirnya mengetahui jika kematian sang kakek ternyata terkait erat dengan eksistensi mereka.

Boleh jadi film ini adalah garapan Tim Burton yang teraneh dari semua karyanya. Kisahnya yang bermain-main dengan konsep ruang dan waktu jelas terlalu rumit dan kompleks untuk anak-anak bahkan penonton dewasa sekalipun. Melompat ke masa kini dan masa lalu, waktu yang berulang atau diistilahkan “loop”, hingga Ymbryne dan anak-anak asuhnya, kita tidak banyak diberi latar belakang yang cukup tentang ini. Namun fokus dan konflik cerita cukup jelas untuk membawa kita ke sebuah petualangan seru dengan visualisasi yang sangat mengagumkan.

Tidak seperti Alice in Wonderland dan sekuelnya yang visualisasinya sangat artifisial. Kali ini Burton menggunakan pendekatan CGI yang amat realistik. Hasilnya adalah sebuah sajian visual yang sangat luar biasa dari semua aspek, seperti bisa kita lihat dalam segmen kapal karam di dasar laut. Satu lagi nilai lebih film ini adalah para kastingnya yang tampil amat menawan. Eva Green bermain sangat baik dan elegan sebagai Miss Peregrine’s yang keras dan disiplin namun menyayangi semua anak asuhnya. Bahkan Samuel L. Jackson yang bermain sebagai Barron sang antagonis nyentrik pun begitu menikmati perannya. Nyaris semua kasting khususnya peran anak-anak bermain sangat baik sebagai individu maupun tim. Ilustrasi musik pun juga berperan kuat sekalipun Burton tidak berkolaborasi dengan komposer regulernya, Danny Elfman.

  Di luar kisahnya yang kompleks dan absurd, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children adalah salah satu film terunik garapan Tim Burton dengan pencapaian visualnya yang superior. Film ini memang bukan karya terbaik Burton namun pencapaian visualnya jelas mampu membawa film ini bersaing kuat untuk kategori ini pada ajang Academy Awards tahun depan. Terbukti sentuhan dan gaya Burton memang bekerja sempurna untuk kisah-kisah bertema fantasi sejenis seperti ini.
