Dilema moral menyoal satu nyawa untuk kepentingan banyak orang sudah sering kita lihat dalam film. Namun perihal membeli umur manusia adalah satu perkara unik yang rasanya baru ini dieksplorasi medium film. Paradise adalah film thriller sci-fi produksi Jerman arahan trio Boris Kunz, Tomas Jonsgården, dan Indre Juskute. Film rilisan Netflix ini dibintangi Kostja Ullmann, Corinna Kirchhoff, Marlene Tanczik, Numan Acar, Irish Berben, dan Lisa-Marie Koroll. Akankah premis dan tema segarnya mampu dieksplorasi dengan baik?

Di masa depan, AEON corp. mengembangkan sebuah teknologi yang mampu mentransfer umur sehingga dimungkinkan seseorang untuk bertambah muda, dan sebaliknya si pendonor bertambah tua. Max (Ullman) adalah agen marketing AEON yang baru mendapatkan penghargaan karyawan terbaik. Max dan istrinya, Elena (Tanczik) meyongsong masa depan mereka yang cerah, hingga malapetaka pun terjadi. Apartemen mereka terbakar dan asuransi tak menanggungnya sehingga mereka terjebak lilitan hutang bank. Pihak bank pun menjaminkan usia Elena untuk didonorkan. Elena harus membayar 40 tahun umurnya untuk menutup hutangnya. Max pun berupaya segala cara untuk mengembalikan kondisi istrinya yang kini seumur neneknya.

Walau absurd dan tak jelas bagaimana secara ilmiah teknologi ini dimungkinkan, namun premisnya memang terbilang segar. Kisahnya tidak memilih mengarah ke hal teknis atau bahkan dilema moral, namun justru sisi thriller dan aksi ketegangan yang jauh dari konsep dan pesannya. Amat disayangkan, premis sebenarnya bisa dieksplorasi lebih dalam melalui pengembangan karakter dua protagonisnya, Max dan Elena. Apakah cinta dan kesetiaan mampu diukur lewat fisik semata? Plotnya tidak berusaha menjawab ini, namun justru bagaimana mereka mencoba mencari cara cepat dan solusi instan agar Elena kembali seperti sediakala. Ini konyol dan malah membunuh pesan kisahnya.

Melalui premis unik yang segar, Paradise mengesampingkan pesan moralnya untuk lebih menyajikan sisi thriller-nya. Dengan potensi premisnya, Paradise sejatinya mampu mengarah lebih filosofis untuk mempertanyakan eksistensi kebahagiaan, cinta, atau pun materi. Bahkan beberapa tokohnya pun sudah menyentil ini seperti ayah Elena. Pengingkaran ini membuat kisahnya terasa sia-sia dan membuang semua pencapaian berkelas dari sisi setting, kasting, hingga tata make-up-nya yang luar biasa. Paradise melewatkan kesempatan besar dengan memilih topik sensitif melalui jalur aman. Sayang sekali.
