“Rebel Moon-Part One: A Child of Fire” is a science fiction film directed by veteran seasoned filmmaker Zack Snyder. This Netflix film stars familiar names, including Sofia Boutella, Djimon Hounsou, Ed Skrein, Michiel Huisman, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Charlie Hunnam, and Anthony Hopkins. This ambitious film, written and produced by the filmmaker himself, has a budget of USD 166 million. Will this be one of the filmmaker’s best works?

One galaxy called The Motherworld is now led by Balisarius with his ruthless right hand, namely General Atticus Noble (Skrein). The emperor’s intentions for complete control of the galaxy were disrupted by a rebellion operating as a guerrilla force and are now being hunted by the general. Once, the general looked for food supplies for his troops in a village on Planet Veldt. Noble was also able to force residents to hand over their future harvests and left dozens of soldiers in the village. Kora (Boutella), a tough young girl, managed to kill the soldiers with the help of a young soldier who defected. The problem is far from over. Kora, accompanied by Gunnar (Huisman), leaves the village to look for reinforcements before the imperial forces arrive.

Do you feel familiar with the plot? For film fans, you will definitely know that the plot is inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s “Seven Samurai,” which tells the story of two villagers looking for knights to protect their village from bandits. Not only this, but the plot elements and nuances of several popular films also feel very strong, for example, “Star Wars,” “Dune,” and “Gladiator.” Whether this is intended as a tribute or something, it is clear that this is not a fresh and solid story. The film is like a role-playing game (RPG) video game that looks for fellow knights to join in the adventure. There is a small surprise in the final act, but that doesn’t help much with the story, which feels odd here and there, besides the weak exposition.

We know exactly that the general’s spaceship can go anywhere easily. Then why should they ask for food reserves from an isolated village on a small planet? Even the general himself had to step into the field. I can’t imagine that in that spaceship there is a large grain silo for their food reserves. This is truly ridiculous. So, doesn’t it seem too easy for the knights to just join Kora without much reward? There are a thousand ways to find a story motif so that the situation can lead more naturally as the script demands. It’s as if the scriptwriter was too lazy to look for a classier option. This doesn’t include the ridiculous dialogue in many of the scenes.

For fans of the filmmaker’s visual touch, “Rebel Moon” is heaven. Snyder returns to his golden touch with impressive cinematography, like “300” and “Watchmen.” The measured composition of the images is very charming in many scenes, as well as the slow-motion technique, which is a mainstay of the action scenes. However, what are all these classy aesthetic achievements without a solid story?

“Rebel Moon-Part One: A Child of Fire” suffers from similar, superior films without a solid script, even though the filmmaker’s visual style is still an emphasis. The filmmaker’s attempt this time was clearly an attempt that failed. His best works, such as “The Dawn of the Dead,” were written by James Gunn, as well as “Watchmen,” where the filmmaker was also not involved. “300” is a pure aesthetic achievement, and its story is simple. His DC superhero films were also considered bad. “Rebel Moon” confirms that the filmmaker needs a reliable writer to process his script, even though it might be too late for part two, which will be released in April next year.

  1. Tepat betul…
