Over the course of a summer, two teenage girls develop the perfect kindred spirit friendship, with one big problem: one of them is dating the other's ex.

Banana Split adalah film drama komedi remaja dewasa garapan Benjamin Kasulke. Walau telah merilis debutnya pada tahun 2018, namun baru pada bulan Maret lalu, film ini dirilis via streaming. Film ini dibintangi oleh Hannah Marks, Liana Liberato, Dylan Sprouse, Addison Riecke, serta Jacob Batalon. Film remaja kebanyakan berkisah tentang hubungan asmara antara dua sepasang kekasih, namun Banana Split menawarkan jauh dari sekadar ini. Untuk peringatan awal, film ini terhitung tontonan dewasa dan bukan untuk remaja sekalipun temanya remaja. Visualisasi adegan seks (walau tak eksplisit) serta kata sumpahan dan saru bahkan bisa dilakukan ringan oleh gadis kecil dan ibunya.

April (Marks)dan Nick (Sprouse) telah menjalani hubungan asmara sejak lama semasa SMU. Dengan teknik montage menawan hanya sekilas saja, kita telah mendapat gambaran hubungan mereka hingga akhirnya putus. Awalnya, kita pasti akan mengira kisahnya bakal berjalan seperti roman remaja lainnya. Balikan, putus, dan balikan lagi. Formula ini ternyata salah besar. Kisahnya justru bermula ketika Nick menjalin asmara dengan gadis pendatang baru, Clara (Liberato). Tanpa sengaja, April dan Clara bertemu dalam sebuah pesta, dan tanpa disadari ternyata keduanya memiliki banyak kesamaan. Hubungan pertemanan aneh ini pun berlanjut dan ini yang membuat penonton penasaran, bagaimana dengan Nick dan perasaan keduanya? Tentu tak akan kita bahas di sini.

Dua bintang utamanya adalah kekuatan terbesar film ini. Marks dan Liberato memiliki chemistry yang luar biasa kuat dalam hubungan pertemanan unik ini. Tidak hanya ketika mereka berdialog, namun gesture tubuh, tatapan mata, hingga cara mereka tertawa dan berinteraksi, mampu berbicara lebih. Kita betah menonton mereka berdialog berjam-jam tanpa bosan. Entah mengapa, kita pun ikut merasakan chemistry yang aneh dalam pertemanan mereka. Bukan semata karena Nick ada di tengah mereka yang saling membuat cemburu, namun seolah justru Nick yang menganggu hubungan kedua gadis ini. Hubungan mereka berdua terlihat sangat menggemaskan. Beberapa kasting lainnya juga ikut mencuri perhatian kita, seperti ibu dan adik April, serta rekan sekolah mereka, Ben. Sisipan humor banyak dimunculkan melalui ketiga karakter ini.

Seperti namanya, Banana Split adalah komedi remaja segar dengan chemistry kuat dua bintangnya serta pesan tentang persahabatan sejati. Sang sineas mampu mengemas kisahnya dengan sangat baik walau dengan gaya konvensional genrenya. Naskahnya yang brilian juga diterjemahkan dengan brilian pula oleh kedua bintang mudanya. Banana Split adalah sebuah film remaja langka, di mana hubungan persahabatan ternyata bisa lebih kuat dari hubungan asmara. Jangankan lewatkan film bagus ini di masa pengasingan ini. Sekali lagi peringatan, film ini adalah tontonan untuk dewasa.
