“Karma is a b*cth!”

Bullet Train adalah film aksi komedi arahan David Leitch yang kita kenal melalui film full action, John Wick serta Atomic Blonde. Naskah film ini diadaptasi dari novel Jepang berjudul Maria Beetle (aka Bullet Train) karya Kōtarō Isaka. Film ini dibintangi sederetan bintang-bintang kenamaan, Brad Pitt, Joey King, Aaron Taylor Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Hiroyuki Sanada, Michael Shannon, serta dua cameo Channing Tatum dan Sandra Bullock. Berbekal aksi dalam setting terbatas dan sederetan bintang besar di atas, akankah memberikan satu tontonan yang menghibur?

Pembunuh bayaran profesional berinisial Ladybug (Pitt) mendapat tugas sederhana, yakni mencari sebuah koper berinisial khusus di sebuah kereta api peluru (Tokyo-Kyoto) dan keluar pada stasiun berikutnya. Dalam misinya ini, Ladybug bertemu dengan beberapa rekan satu profesinya yang memiliki tujuan yang berbeda, yakni The Wolf, Lemon (Henry) & Tangerine (Johnson), The Prince (King) serta The Hornet. Misi mereka rupanya saling bersinggungan satu sama lain sehingga bentrok pun tak terhindarkan. Mereka tak menyadari bahwa otak di balik semua ini adalah seorang gangster Rusia, White Death (Shannon) yang tengah diincar oleh The Elder (Sanada) yang ingin membalas dendam kematian ayahnya.

Rumit? Jika kamu melewatkan sedikit saja informasi cerita, maka semua akan terlewat. Namun tak perlu khawatir karena segala misteri dan rahasia menjadi tak penting karena sisi humor dan polah konyol tiap karakternya adalah yang menjadi menu utamanya. Sosok Ladybug, Lemon, dan Tangerine menjadi bintang utama yang mencuri perhatian sepanjang film. Lho bukankah ini film aksi? Aksi hanyalah katalis untuk menjual leluconnya semata. Nyawa seperti tidak ada harganya dalam plotnya dan sisi ketegangan pun nyaris tak bisa kita rasakan. Jika kisahnya disajikan lebih serius, rasanya film ini bakal memiliki atmosfir yang berbeda.

Hal yang ditawarkan Bullet Train, setting terbatas, waktu menerus, sisi komedi dan penampilan sederetan kasting bintangnya, tak lebih. Plot film ini layaknya Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (Guy Ritchie) pada setting terbatas dalam kereta yang melaju dalam kecepatan tinggi. Kejutan demi kejutan disajikan silih berganti dengan segala aksi yang serba kebetulan. Leitch memang konsisten dengan gayanya yang memang fokus ke aksi ketimbang sisi drama. Jika aksi dan humor yang kamu harapkan, film ini adalah tontonan wajib. Bagi saya, Bullet Train hanya melintas dengan cepat tanpa ada sesuatu yang membekas.
