Choose or Die adalah film horor thriller produksi Inggris arahan sineas debutan Toby Meakins. Film ini dibintangi Asa Butterfield, Iola Evans, Eddie Marsan, dan aktor gaek, Robert Englund. Film berdurasi 85 menit ini dirilis platform Netflix tanggal 15 April 2022 kemarin. Film horor tentang gim dan perniknya terhitung jarang, kita lihat apa yang ingin ditawarkan film ini?

Kayla (Evans) adalah seorang mahasiswi yang menyambi kerja sebagai cleaning service untuk menambah biaya studinya. Ia berkawan dengan seorang programer, Isaac (Butterfield), yang juga mengoleksi perangkat IT lawas. Kayla lalu menemukan satu box gim retro yang masih utuh bernama CURS>R dan tertulis hadiah USD 125.000. Isaac pun membiarkan Kayla membawanya. Malamnya, Kayla mencoba menghubungi nomor yang tertera dan entah bagaimana, ia pun masuk dalam permainan choose or die. Gim yang terlihat mudah, rupanya terhubung ke realita di sekitarnya yang sungguhan terjadi. Kayla pun tanpa ia sadari terjebak dalam sebuah permainan hidup mati.

Sejak menonton trailer-nya idenya memang tampak menarik, namun apa yang ada di baliknya, serba tak jelas. Gim ini jauh dari akal sehat dan logika. Siapa yang membuatnya, dan yang terpenting bagaimana bisa membuatnya senyata itu? Bagaimana sebuah program bisa membuat seseorang untuk menuruti kemauan bahkan hingga membuat wujud ruang sedemikian rupa? Apa ini halusinasi, hipnotis, mimpi, sihir, kekuatan pikiran, teknologi alien, atau apa? Dengan sabar dan melelahkan jawaban yang ditunggu tak kunjung hadir. Selama ini tak bisa terjawab, tak ada gunanya membahas aspek lainnya.

Choose or Die, boleh jadi idenya segar untuk genrenya, namun plotnya yang absurd dan konyol, serta pesan yang salah membuatnya tak layak tonton. Sesuatu yang terjelaskan bisa jadi hanya berupa simbol/metafora. Oke, anggap gim ini adalah simbol trauma dan rasa takut Kayla, namun solusi ending-nya sama sekali tak mengarah ke sini. Film ini justru terbilang menyesatkan dengan mengirim pesan yang salah. Bagi yang percaya karma, sesuatu yang baik akan berbuah baik, begitu pula sebaliknya. Tak pernah ada cerita, kita bisa semaunya menyiksa orang jahat. Apa yang ada di pikiran pembuat film/naskah sehingga bisa membuat cerita konyol semacam ini? Edan.
