Dangerous Lies adalah film drama kriminal arahan Michael Scott yang sebelumnya banyak dikenal sebagai pembuat film televisi. Film ini dibintangi nama-nama yang belum terlalu familiar di layar lebar, sebut saja Camilla Mendes, Jessie T. Usher, Jamie Chung, serta Elliot Gould. Walau menyanding logo Netflix, tak ada ekspektasi lebih ketika menonton, namun rupanya film ini tak seburuk yang saya pikir.

Katie bekerja sebagai pendamping lanjut usia bernama Leonard di rumah besarnya. Empat bulan sudah, ia bekerja di sana dan bahkan bersahabat dekat dengannya. Katie bersama suaminya, Adam, kini tengah menghadapi masalah ekonomi serius. Leonard pun membantu Katie mempekerjakan Adam sebagai tukang kebun. Bahkan Leonard pun menambah bonus untuk Katie dalam jumlah yang tak wajar. Masalah pun bermula ketika keesokan harinya, Leonard meninggal dan mewariskan seluruh hartanya ke Katie. Hidup Katie pun berubah dengan orang-orang disekelilingnya yang mencoba mengambil keuntungan dari situasi tersebut.

Film ini tampak sekali bernuansa “FTV” yang memang menjadi latar keahlian sang sineas. Namun, tak buruk sama sekali. Kisahnya memang mulai menarik sejak babak kedua, di mana kita mulai meragukan orang-orang yang ada di sekitar Katie. Kebohongan batasnya tipis sekali, dan kita tak tahu mana yang benar dan salah, bahkan sosok Katie sendiri selama beberapa saat. Beberapa fakta, memang terasa membingungkan karena hanya disajikan melalui dialog cepat (ciri khas film televisi). Misal saja, apa hubungan perampokan di awal dengan kasus Leonard? Banyak hal tentu tak sulit diantisipasi, (terima kasih untuk pemilihan kastingnya) namun twist akhir lumayan mengejutkan juga, walau ini sudah tak penting lagi. Uang, berlian, entah apa lagi, semua mengalir terlalu cepat, sebelum semuanya berakhir.

Untuk selingan menonton, Dangerous Lies, memang tak buruk untuk film kelas B-Movies dengan kejutan twist-nya serta sensasi masa lalunya. Pada akhirnya, hitam dan putih, batasannya tegas. Kejahatan selalu akan ada balasannya. Crime doesn’t pay. Walau bernuansa TV, namun saya sedikit merindukan ini, ketika nilai kejujuran, etika, dan moral masih dijunjung tinggi seperti dalam seri televisi 1980-1990-an. Nilai-nilai yang rasanya sudah langka di era modern kini. Sebagai penutup, saya ingin melihat bagaimana Mendes berakting dalam film lainnya karena gadis muda ini punya potensi.
