Escape the Field adalah film thriller arahan Emerson Moore yang dibintangi oleh Jordan Claire Robbins, Theo Rossi, dan Shane West. Film yang dirilis platform Amazon Prime ini memiliki latar setting eksterior hanya di sebuah ladang jagung yang luas. Layaknya, permainan escape room dengan set unik, film ini memiliki ide dan premis menarik untuk level produksinya.

Sam (Robbins) terbangun sendirian di tengah ladang jagung dengan pistol dan satu buah peluru di sampingnya. Ternyata ia tidak sendirian, empat orang lain juga terjebak di tempat tersebut dengan beberapa item di tubuh mereka, yakni lentera, sebungkus korek api, kompas, dan belati. Sambil mencari tahu apa yang terjadi dengan mencoba mencari jalan keluar, mereka harus berhadapan pula dengan sesosok “monster” yang memangsa mereka satu persatu.

Sejak awal, kisahnya memang mengusik rasa penasaran kita. Separuh durasi pun, plotnya masih mampu menjaga intensitas misteri dan ketegangan. Kunci tipikal thriller permainan survival macam ini selain prosesnya adalah motif. Siapa orang-orang ini? Mengapa mereka? Untuk apa mereka berada di sana? Semuanya harus terjawab. Film ini banyak mengingatkan pada Predators (2010), The Maze Runner (2014), dan Into the Tall Grass (2019). Escape the Field adalah kombinasi ketiganya plus permainan teka-teki ala Escape Room. Kombinasi ini patut diapresiasi, namun hingga akhir, substansi kisahnya (tiga pertanyaan di atas) tidak pernah terjawab dengan lugas. Ini yang menjadi kegagalan terbesar filmnya. Ending-nya memang memberi petunjuk besar, tapi tetap tidak menjawab apa pun.

Escape The Field memiliki premis thriller yang menjanjikan namun malah tersesat dalam prosesnya. Melalui para kastingnya yang bermain bagus dan setting “minimalis” yang mengesankan, film ini sebenarnya mampu dieksplorasi lebih dalam lagi. Latar belakang tokoh-tokohnya semestinya punya relasi kuat dengan situasi uji coba tersebut. Apa yang mereka hadapi, entah itu eksperiman pemerintah, alien, ranah gaib, atau lainnya, tidak punya sesuatu yang kuat untuk kita bisa peduli dengan tiap karakternya. What’s the point? Jika ingin mencari film yang lebih baik, ketiga judul film di atas bisa jadi acuan, atau jika kamu mau plot bertahan hidup dan saling bunuh, bisa tonton seri The Hunger Games atau Battle Royale (Jepang), atau The Hunt. Semua film ini punya motif, alasan, serta pesan yang jelas.
