False Positive adalah film drama thriller arahan John Lee. Film rilisan platform Hulu ini dibintangi oleh Ilana Glazer, Justin Theroux, serta aktor kawakan Pierce Brosnan. Kegelisahan seorang ibu yang tengah mengandung anak pertamanya beberapa kali disajikan dalam film melalui beragam genre. False Positive adalah salah satunya yang tercatat paling unik dengan bermain dengan ranah horor, bahkan pula bisa masuk kategori sci-fi.

Adrian (Theroux) dan Lucy (Glazer) tidak dikaruniai seorang anak setelah beberapa tahun pernikahan mereka. Akhirnya mereka memutuskan untuk mengunjungi klinik seorang dokter spesialis kandungan kenamaan, John Hindle (Brosnan) yang juga mantan dosen Adrian. Setelahnya, Lucy pun hamil. Dalam perkembangan, Lucy menemui beberapa kejanggalan pada praktik sang dokter serta pula kecurigaan pada suaminya. Ataukah, ini semua hanya delusi sang ibu yang terlalu khawatir terhadap kondisi janinnya?

Formula macam ini seringkali kita lihat dalam genre horor di mana sisi kewarasan sang protagonis dipertanyakan. Apakah sang ibu yang sudah tidak waras atau delusional, ataukah apa yang ia cemaskan, rasakan, atau lihat adalah kenyataan?  Film horor garapan Ari Aster misalnya, Hereditary serta Midsommar bermain-main di wilayah ini dengan brilian hingga sulit diantisipasi penonton. False Positive, bermain sangat baik mengemas sisi misteri plotnya nyaris sepanjang film. Penonton memang tak sulit menduga opsi arah kisahnya karena sepanjang plot, dua sisi ini saling ditonjolkan sama baiknya. Penonton dibawa masuk ke dalam rasa penasaran tak berujung yang akhirnya “terjawab” di-ending. Iyakah?

Di luar kisah uniknya dan premis yang menjanjikan, False Positive memiliki ending dan pesan yang mengaburkan. Film ini bisa mengarah ke depresi sang ibu di masa kehamilan, yang disajikan brilian, namun ending-nya rasanya terlalu gelap dan brutal untuk pesannya. Satu lagi adalah masuk ranah sci-fi, bicara soal superioritas pria melalui sosok Dr. Hindle. Ending-nya pun lagi-lagi terlalu brutal untuk ini. Lalu apakah keduanya benar-benar terjadi? Jika ya, lantas apa poinnya mengemas cerita demikian rumit? Dari sisi estetik dan cerita, film ini memang punya nilai lebih, namun jika dimaksudkan sebagai pesan (khususnya calon ibu), film ini sama seperti poin judulnya. Ataukah memang ini yang diharapkan sang pembuat film? Penonton perempuan (seorang ibu) rasanya bisa memahami filmnya lebih baik.
