Shadyside, 1978. School's out for summer and the activities at Camp Nightwing are about to begin. But when another Shadysider is possessed with the urge to kill, the fun in the sun becomes a gruesome fight for survival.

Fear Street Part Two 1978 (FS 1978) merupakan sekuel dari film bagian pertamanya (FS 1994) yang masih digarap Leigh Janiak, yang diadaptasi dari seri novel berjudul sama karya R.L. Stine. Filmnya kini dibintangi oleh Sadie Sink, Emily Rudd, Ryan Simpkins, serta dua pemain seri pertamanya, Kiara Madeira serta Benjamin Flores. Seri keduanya ini dirilis Netflix, seminggu setelah seri pertamanya dan seri ketiganya akan dirilis minggu depan.

Untuk menolong Sam, Deena dan Josh mencoba menemui korban yang selamat dari pembantaian massal pada tahun 1978, yakni, C. Berman alias Ziggy. Berman lalu mengisahkan bagaimana detil peristiwa tersebut terjadi, di mana ia, kakaknya Cindy, dan rekan satu sekolahnya saat itu tengah liburan musim panas di Camp Nightwing. Berawal dari kejadian aneh ketika seorang perawat berniat membunuh Tommy, pacar Cindy. Tanpa disadari Ziggy, Cindy dan rekan-rekannya, terseret dalam satu kutukan sang penyihir Sarah Frier, yang satu demi satu menewaskan para siswa di sana.

Kembali, plot filmnya merupakan tribute dari Friday the 13th (1980) yang setting-nya kini mirip dengan Camp Crystal Lake. Sang pembantai pun sosoknya mirip dengan Jason Voorhees. Ketimbang seri pertamanya, FS 1978, mengalami banyak peningkatan kualitas, baik dari sisi kisah maupun unsur ketegangannya. Setting yang hanya terbatas di lingkungan camp juga berhasil dibangun mengesankan untuk mendukung kisahnya. Kita tahu, pembantaian massal bakal terjadi, namun alur plotnya mampu membangun sisi misteri dan ketegangan dengan sangat baik yang berbeda tone dengan seri pertamanya. Seolah kita menonton film yang sama sekali baru. Beberapa sisi misteri di FS 1994, kini juga terjawab di sekuelnya ini.

Di luar naskahnya yang kini lebih solid, FS 1978 tertolong banyak oleh penampilan semua kastingnya yang bermain apik, khususnya Sink dan Rudd, sebagai dua bersaudari Berman. Mereka semua membuat kisahnya menjadi amat meyakinkan dan memudahkan kita untuk larut masuk dalam plotnya. Pengadeganan pun juga jauh lebih baik, khususnya dalam membangun aksi menegangkan dengan situasi mengancam. Ketegangan macam ini, tak bisa saya rasakan di seri pertamanya. Aksi brutal dan sadis pun, masih banyak tersaji yang bakal memuaskan fans genrenya.

Fear Street Part Two 1978 masih pula memberikan sensasi nostalgia genrenya dengan sedikit peningkatan dari seri pertamanya. Sekuelnya ini, rasanya memberi kita jawaban tentang pendekatan estetik sang sineas yang memang dimaksudkan sebagai tribute film-film slasher di eranya. Teknik jump scare masa kini, macam seri Conjuring, tak pernah kita jumpai dalam adegan horornya. Semua tekniknya serba konvensional atau old school yang membuat sisi ketegangannya menjadi lebih nyata bukan cima mengagetkan. Walau memang tidak selevel dengan film-film tribute-nya, namun tetap saja konsep ide trilogi ini adalah satu hal yang brilian untuk penonton masa kini. Kita tunggu seri ketiganya, Fear Street 1666, minggu depan.
