A refugee couple makes a harrowing escape from war-torn South Sudan, but then they struggle to adjust to their new life in an English town that has an evil lurking beneath the surface.

His House merupakan film horor arahan Remi Weekes yang dirilis oleh Netflix pada bulan Oktober lalu. Film produksi BBC Films ini dibintangi oleh aktor-aktris Inggris, Wunmi Mosaku, Sope Dirisu, serta Matt Smith. His House memiliki nuansa kental isu imigran dan secara unik mengkombinasinya dengan tema horor konvensional.

Bol dan Rial adalah sepasang suami istri yang merupakan pengungsi asal Sudan. Setelah menanti sekian lama di pengungsian yang berlokasi di Inggris, akhirnya mereka mendapatkan kesempatan untuk hidup normal di sebuah wilayah pinggiran kota dalam pengawasan supervisor. Pasangan tersebut mendapat tempat tinggal yang layak dengan harapan besar menanti mereka. Semalam di rumah tersebut, Bol dan Rial merasakan ada sesuatu yang janggal di rumah tersebut yang tidak hanya menganggu secara fisik, namun juga menguak masa lalu mereka yang kelam.

Plotnya memang terasa konvensional untuk genrenya. Tema “haunted house” telah dieksplorasi ratusan kali, namun tidak seperti film ini. Bagi fans seri Conjuring rasanya sulit mendapat tempat di sini. His House memang tidak mengarah ke sini dan bukan inovasi jump scare dan sosok seram yang mereka tawarkan. Sementara penikmat horor multi level macam ini bisa jadi juga sudah tak asing selain melihat isu dan kedalaman temanya. His House mampu meresponnya dengan sangat baik. Sebuah kejutan kecil di pertengahan durasi mengubah segalanya dengan resolusi akhir yang solid.

Walau tak bisa dibilang menghibur untuk ukuran genrenya, His House secara unik mampu mencampurkan plot rumah hantu dengan tema dan isu pengungsi dengan gaya berkelas. Banyak momen mencampurkan masa kini, masa lalu, dan imajinasi secara efektif. Sementara dua pemain utamanya bermain apik dengan ekspresi trauma yang begitu terasa sekali sepanjang filmnya. Seperti dalam banyak film horor, iblis bisa merupakan manisfestasi dari pikiran negatif, rasa bersalah, atau trauma berkepanjangan. Cukup hadapi kenyataan karena masa lalu tidak akan bisa diubah. Waktu yang akan menyembuhkan.
