Joe is a middle-school band teacher whose life hasn't quite gone the way he expected. His true passion is jazz. But when he travels to another realm to help someone find their passion, he soon discovers what it means to have soul.

Soul adalah film animasi fantasi produksi Studio Pixar yang dirilis Walt Disney Studio melalui platform Disney +. Soul diarahkan oleh Pete Docter yang juga menggarap film-film Pixar berkualitas tinggi, yakni Monster Inc., Up, serta Inside Out. Film ini diisi suara oleh Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, hingga Angela Basset. Mampukah film ini satu level dengan film-film masterpiece produksi studio Pixar lainnya?

Joe Gardner adalah seorang guru musik yang segenap jiwa raganya mencintai musik. Impiannya hidupnya cuma satu, yakni bisa satu panggung dengan idolanya, Dorothea Williams. “Aku mending mati jika bisa satu panggung dengannya” ujar Joe. Keinginan Joe pun rupanya terkabul. Ia masuk ke alam baka akibat kelengahannya. Dengan tekad untuk kembali ke alam dunia, Joe pun terjebak dalam mekanisme dunia akhirat yang rumit di mana ia harus membantu satu jiwa yang bebal (jiwa no: 22) yang anti dengan kehidupan di alam fana.

Seperti Inside Out, rasanya konsep kisah Soul bakal sulit diterima penonton anak-anak atau remaja jika memang itu yang menjadi sasarannya. Saya tak yakin pula, orang dewasa mampu mencerna kisahnya dengan mudah. Soul boleh jadi adalah film produksi studio Pixar yang kisahnya paling kompleks. Makna kisahnya yang berlapis pada film-film Pixar sebelumnya setidaknya masih mampu diterima penonton anak-anak di lapisan kulit luarnya (baca: menghibur) tapi kali ini rasanya tidak.

Soul dengan tempo yang disajikan begitu cepat sejak awal, tidak memberi kesempatan untuk mencerna kisahnya melalui konsep dan aturan akhirat yang begitu absurd. Aturan logika jelas memiliki konsep berbeda di kisah film ini, tapi satu pertanyaan kecil saja, mengapa hanya jiwa Joe yang panik di alam akhirat hingga ia bisa jatuh ke alam di bawahnya? Apa hanya Joe yang tak terima jika ia telah mati (baca: mati penasaran)? Belum ini terjawab, segala kerumitan alam baka semakin bertambah membingungkan dengan munculnya sosok-sosok baru. Wow, entah ini mungkin hanya sisi humor, rupanya petugas akhirat pun bisa salah hitung dan gila pujian.

Kisah mulai semakin jelas arahnya sejak plotnya beralih ke alam dunia. Inti cerita mulai menguat dengan jiwa Joe dan Nomor 22 masing-masing memiliki tujuan yang tegas. Joe ingin segera hidup sementara 22 mencoba mencari alasan untuk hidup. Gesekan ini tentu membuat kisahnya menjadi menarik tapi lagi-lagi pengembangan kisah dengan segala aturan mainnya mengaburkan plotnya. Pesan akhirnya jelas dan amat sederhana tapi prosesnya sungguh saya tidak bisa paham. Nyaris separuh cerita, sulit untuk bisa larut dalam kisahnya.

Di luar pencapaian estetik yang mengesankan, Soul mencoba mengirimkan pesan sederhana tentang kehidupan tapi kehilangan jiwa dalam perjalanannya. Terlalu rumit dan banyaknya konsep membuat segalanya tumpang tindih. Bagi Joe, passion saja ternyata tak cukup untuk bisa memaknai hidup. Lalu apa? Bukankah passion adalah satu jalan untuk bisa memahami kehidupan dan membuat diri kita menjadi manusia yang lebih baik? Banyak film produksi Pixar, termasuk film-film sang sineas sendiri sudah menjawab bagaimana memaknai kehidupan dengan cara yang sangat berkelas.
