Firestarter adalah film remake bertitel sama yang dirilis tahun 1984. Film yang diadaptasi dari novel arahan novelis terkemuka Stephen Kings ini, diarahkan oleh Keith Thomas yang juga mengarahkan horor unik The Vigil (2019). Film ini dibintangi Zac Efron, Sidney Lemmon, Gloria Reuben, serta pendatang baru Ryan Kiera Amstrong. Produser horor kenamaan, Jason Blum ada di balik kursi produser yang seringkali memproduksi horor-horor murah yang nge-hits. Lalu bagaimana dengan Firestarter?

Sejak lahir, Charlie (Amstrong) adalah seorang gadis remaja yang memiliki kekuatan pyrokinesis yakni mampu menciptakan dan mengendalikan api. Ayahnya (Efron) yang juga memiliki kekuatan telepati adalah yang selama ini mengontrol emosi putrinya. Sang ibu pun ternyata memiliki kekuatan telekinesis (menggerakkan benda). Mereka yang selama ini bersembunyi rupanya terdeteksi oleh fasilitas rahasia (The Shop) yang dulu menciptakan kekuatan mereka. Sang pimpinan pun mengutus agen Rainbird untuk memburu sang gadis. Rainbird pun ternyata juga memiliki kemampuan psikis yang sama. Aksi perburuan seru pun dimulai.

Entah tahun kapan menonton film aslinya. Saya tidak ingat secuil pun adegannya, menandakan film ini tak mampu memberi kenangan yang membekas, tidak seperti Carrie yang fantastis. Film remake-nya ini kurang lebih sama, hanya saja pendekatan teknisnya memicu nostalgia film-film pada eranya, melalui musik, pengadeganan, dan tone gambar. Terlepas ini loyal atau tidak dengan sumber aslinya (novel), plot “Terminator”-nya tidak mampu memberikan ketegangan yang cukup untuk memicu adrenalin penonton. Mengapa membuat sebuah remake yang tanggung? Di era genre superhero kini, penonton sudah terbiasa menonton adegan-adegan aksi heboh yang jauh lebih dari ini. Walau tak mampu dari sisi bujet, setidaknya kisahnya bisa dibuat lebih intens dan menggigit. Adegan-adegan bertempo lambat dengan dialog-dialog yang tidak menggugah cukup untuk membuat penonton terlelap, termasuk saya.

Melalui tone 1980-an yang kental, Firestarter tidak mampu membangun sisi thriller yang cukup sesuai premisnya yang membara. Saya apresiasi pendekatan estetiknya, namun tidak untuk kisahnya. Terdapat satu adegan yang sangat menganggu, saya tidak ingat apa ini ada di film aslinya. Seekor kucing tak berdosa menjadi korban “amarah” gadis seumur Charlie. Kita semua tahu, tak ada kucing yang benar-benar jadi korban, namun adegan ini begitu membekas dan untuk mengingat adegan ini saja sungguh membuat tak nyaman. Apa tak ada cara lain yang lebih halus untuk menyajikan adegan ini. Saya tak paham mengapa remake ini diproduksi, entah hanya sensasi superhero, atau popularitas novelnya, apapun itu, film ini sungguh tak perlu dibuat. Sosok macam Blum mestinya mampu melakukan lebih dari ini.
