Free Guy adalah film aksi fiksi ilmiah arahan Shawn Levy yang kita kenal dengan seri Night at the Museum. Film ini dibintangi aktor papan atas, Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Lil Rel Howery, serta sineas kawakan,Taika Waititi. Film berbujet lebih dari USD 100 juta ini seharusnya rilis tahun lalu dan baru dirilis bulan Agustus lalu. Film bertema video game memang sudah tak lagi baru, apa kini yang coba ditawarkan Free Guy?

Guy (Reynolds) adalah seorang pria biasa yang hidup dengan rutinitas hariannya sebagai seorang pegawai bank di kota bernama Free City. Aksi kriminal adalah hal biasa di kota ini dan warganya pun seolah sudah hidup berdampingan dengan kekerasan senjata. Suatu ketika, Guy merasa ada yang aneh dengan dirinya dan dunia di sekitarnya sejak ia bertemu dengan gadis cantik misterius bernama Millie aka Molotov Girl. Free City ternyata adalah sebuah video game online dan Guy adalah sebuah anomali atau glicth.

Dari ringkasan cerita di atas, aroma The Matrix sudah tercium kental. Memang beberapa ada kesamaan cerita, namun film ini juga mirip konsepnya dengan beberapa film video game lain, sebut saja Ready Player One hingga Tron Legacy. Satu hal yang membedakan hanyalah sang protagonis adalah digital alias tidak eksis. Inti cerita juga ternyata tidak mengarah ke sesuatu yang lebih dalam atau tema eksistensialisme layaknya The Matrix. Dengan segala kerumitannya, film ini hanyalah sebuah kisah cinta yang manis dan sederhana.

Premis menarik dengan dominasi efek visual, Free Guy mendapat komparasi hebat dari film sejenis yang lebih superior. Film ini memang tidak hingar bingar seperti Ready Player One, namun sisi komedinya lebih dari cukup untuk menghibur kita. Film ini memang bisa mengarah ke satu tema yang lebih dalam, namun realitanya tidak. Setidaknya, film ini mencoba mengajarkan pada kita untuk tidak terjebak pada mimpi/fantasi namun kenyataan. Guy yang seorang Non Player Character (NPC) saja ingin bebas, mengapa kita tidak?
