Setting perang memang sangat jarang dikembangkan oleh para pembuat film, selain untuk genre biografi, aksi, serta beberapa film superhero populer belakangan. Overlord (2018) mencoba sesuatu yang baru dengan mengkombinasinya dengan horor dan fiksi ilmiah. Ghosts of War kini mencoba mengeksplorasi dengan caranya yang segar, namun sayangnya sedikit berlebihan.

Ghosts of War adalah film perang-horor arahan Eric Bress yang kita kenal melalui film unik Butterfly Effect serta menulis naskah seri Final Destination. Film ini dibintangi oleh beberapa aktor muda yang kita kenal di serial televisi, seperti Brenton Thwaites, Theo Rossi, Kyle Garner, Alan Ritchson, serta Skylar Astin. Walau bukan diproduksi studio besar, namun pencapaian sisi teknis filmnya terbilang sangat lumayan, khususnya setting.

Pada masa Perang Dunia II, lima orang tentara AS mendapat misi untuk mendiami sebuah rumah besar di sebuah kota kecil di Perancis, yang dulu pernah diduduki pihak Nazi. Konon para penghuni rumah tersebut dibunuh secara sadis oleh tentara Jerman. Kejadian aneh pun terjadi, sesaat setelah mereka bermalam di sana. Entiti tak kasat mata secara perlahan mulai menganggu kelima prajurit tersebut yang menguji kewarasan mereka.

Amat menarik. Premisnya sungguh menjanjikan sebuah kisah yang segar karena lazimnya adalah sebuah keluarga yang berada di posisi para tentara tersebut. Para tentara yang terlatih dan bersenjata lengkap tentu membuat situasinya menjadi serba berbeda. Setting rumah besar yang luar biasa, baik sisi eksterior dan interior, sama bagusnya mendukung atmosfir horor filmnya. Ekspektasi mulai semakin menguat sepanjang perkembangan cerita yang memang mengusik rasa penasaran. Jump scare menjadi andalan utama sepanjang filmnya. Sekalipun tak lagi anyar, namun atmosfir cerita yang berbeda membuat segalanya menjadi terasa segar. Tidak hingga titik balik cerita kedua (3/4 durasi) mengubah 180° kisahnya. Apakah mengejutkan twist-nya? Tidak juga, kita pernah melihat ini sebelumnya (menyebut judul film = spoiler) dan ini justru merusak cerita yang telah dibangun apik sejak awal. Apa untungnya bersusah payah melakukan uji coba macam itu? Menyelamatkan dunia pun tidak.

Dengan kombinasi genre dan premis yang segar, The Ghosts of War memiliki segalanya untuk bisa menjadi sesuatu yang lebih, namun inovasi berlebihan justru menghancurkan kisahnya. Kombinasi kisah dan genrenya masih bisa dieksplorasi jauh lebih baik dari ini. What a waste. Semoga masih ada pembuat film yang mau melirik ke arah ini di masa mendatang.
