I am Groot

Untuk pertama kalinya, Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), membuat seri animasi 3D pendek yang mengetengahkan sosok Baby Groot. Walau I Am Groot tidak punya narasi besar dengan semesta sinematiknya, namun latar plotnya terjadi di antara peristiwa Guardian of the Galaxy (2014) dan Guardian of the Galaxy Vol.2 (2017). Seri pendek rilisan Disney+ ini diarahkan oleh Kirsten Lapore, di mana Marvel Studios berkolaborasi dengan studio visual efek, Luma Pictures. Sang produser, Kevin Feige masih duduk menjadi salah satu produsernya, termasuk pula James Gunn, sineas seri Guardian of the Galaxy.

Tak banyak alur plot yang dikisahkan seri pendek berdurasi rata-rata 3-4 menit ini. Semua serinya berisi polah sang protagonis dalam satu petualangan kecil di antara peristiwa-peristiwa besar dalam plot dua film di atas. Dalam tiap serinya, Baby Groot memiliki lawan “antagonis”-nya sendiri yang semata hanya selipan plot kecil yang tidak berarti apa pun. Seperti dalam episode pertama menyajikan rivalitas sang bayi dengan pohon mini bonsai yang menghiasi kamarnya. Lalu bagaimana keisengannya berendam dalam lumpur yang menganggu tidur seekor burung. Semua hanyalah kepingan-kepingan kecil yang menunjukkan pencapaian visual yang amat mengagumkan. Tidak lebih.

Serangkaian petualangan pendek komedik sosok Groot, I Am Groot semata hanyalah seri pertunjukan visual yang memukau. Entah apa strategi MCU, memasukkan seri pendek ini menjadi bagian dari fase keempat. Apapun itu, Marvel Studios memiliki sumber daya (bujet) yang tak terkira saat ini untuk berbuat apa saja yang mereka mau. Entah ini hanya iseng atau sekadar pemanasan untuk membuat seri film animasi yang lebih besar, kita tunggu saja. Menurut berita, lima episode lagi tengah dalam pengerjaan, semoga durasinya lebih panjang sedikit dengan narasi yang lebih kompleks.
