Based on Disneyland's theme park ride where a small riverboat takes a group of travelers through a jungle filled with dangerous animals and reptiles but with a supernatural element.

Jungle Cruise adalah film petualangan fantasi arahan Jaume Collet-Serra. Film raksasa berbujet USD 200 juta ini diadaptasi dari salah satu wahana populer taman bermain Disney yang bertitel sama. Tak tanggung-tanggung, film ini dibintangi aktor-aktris top, Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Edgar ramirez, Paul Giamatti, Jack Whitehall, dan Jesse Plemons. Genre petualangan, kini memang tergolong langka diproduksi, dan film ini bisa dibilang punya relasi dekat dengan seri Indiana Jones.

Lily (Blunt) adalah seorang ilmuwan yang terobesi untuk mencari “pohon kehidupan” yang konon bunganya mampu menyembuhkan segala macam penyakit di muka bumi ini. Obsesinya membawa Lily ke hutan belantara liar Amazon, berpetualang bersama kapten kapal eksentrik bernama Frank (Johnson). Di lain pihak, Joachim (Plemons), seorang bangsawan Jerman, mengincar pohon yang sama untuk tujuan jahatnya.

Dilihat dari konsepnya yang mengambil satu wahana di taman bermain, kisahnya jelas sudah tak bisa kita anggap serius. Ini sudah merupakan masalah besar, jika kamu mencari sesuatu selain dari sisi hiburan. Jungle Cruise semata dibuat memang hanya untuk ini. Jika kamu terhibur, ya, ini memang filmmu. Film ini begitu memanjakan mata dengan desain produksi (set) serta panorama yang demikian memukau. Efek visual (CGI) nyaris mendominasi sepanjang film. Jika kamu terpesona dengan pencapaian visual Proxima, si macan tutul peliharaan Frank (jelas tidak, bagi saya), 100%, ini adalah filmmu. Untuk segala aspek teknisnya, film ini memang tidak main-main, coba lihat saja bujetnya.

Naskahnya yang tak serius, berbanding terbalik dengan para kasting topnya. Johnson dan Blunt adalah sedikit dari pemain film yang jarang bermain dalam film yang bernaskah buruk (terkecuali seri Fast & Furious). Selain uang, saya tidak paham, mengapa mereka bisa bermain dalam film ini? Naskahnya jauh sekali dari kualitas dan potensi akting mereka semua. Jika tidak karena kastingnya, film ini sudah habis sejak awal.

Tribute terhadap film populer lainnya adalah satu hal yang paling saya suka dalam film ini. Jika pernah menonton film klasik The African Queen (1951), kamu pasti tahu persis, apa saja yang terinspirasi dari film ini. Seri Indiana Jones adalah menjadi favorit tribute-nya, banyak sekali adegan aksi yang mengambil inspirasi dari seri ini. Boleh dibilang, alur plotnya sendiri adalah kisah petualangan “Indy” mencari harta karun. Satu aksi favorit saya adalah segmen pembuka di gudang museum. Bagi yang kangen dengan sosok Indy, Jungle Cruise adalah tontonan wajib.

Sejak awal, Jungle Cruise tak pernah menganggap naskahnya serius selain aksi hiburan ala Indiana Jones yang memanjakan mata. Empati pada tiap karakternya bisa dicapai bukan karena naskahnya, namun karena penampilan kuat kastingnya. Sang sineas yang terampil mengemas sisi ketegangan bersama Liam Nesson dalam Non-Stop dan The Commuter, kini tak bisa membuat satu segmen aksi tegang yang menggigit. Tak ada ancaman berarti pada sosok protagonis kita karena kita pun tak pernah larut dalam kisahnya. Lantunan musik “Nothing Else Matter” (Metallica) dalam opening logo Disney serta satu montage-nya, sudah mewakili perasaan saya pada film ini.
