Luca adalah film produksi Pixar yang diarahkan oleh debutan sineas asal Italia, Enrico Casarosa. Casarosa sebelumnya adalah yang mengarahkan film animasi pendek berkelas, La Luna. Film animasi ini diisi suara oleh beberapa nama yang tak asing, sebut saja Jacob Tremblay, Jack Dylan Grazer, Maya Rudoplh, dan Emma Berman. Film ini dirilis sehari lalu secara streaming oleh platform Disney +. Dengan bermodal nama besar studio Pixar, mampukah Luca bersanding dengan film-film masterpiece produksi studio ini lainnya?

Luca adalah seekor monster laut yang penasaran dengan dunia manusia. Pertemuannya dengan rekan barunya, Alberto, membawanya ke sebuah petualangan baru di dunia daratan. Sementara sang ibu melarang untuk bermain di sana dan menghukumnya, Luca dan Alberto malah kabur ke kota untuk menggapai mimpi mereka, yakni mengendarai motor Vespa.

Seperti kebanyakan film-film Pixar lainnya, kisahnya ringan dan gamblang, dan kali ini, wilayah pantai eksotis di Italia yang menjadi setting kisahnya. Atmosfir Italia begitu kental dalam filmnya, baik dialog hingga arsitektur. Tidak seperti sebelumnya, untuk satu film, Luca mengusung banyak isu dan tema dengan tidak hanya mengusung tema persahabatan, namun juga keluarga, beda ras, malah bahkan mungkin menyinggung isu LGBT. Semangat kisah film pendek La Luna yang mengusung hubungan ayah dan anak juga muncul dalam plotnya. Isu ras rasanya adalah tercatat sesuatu yang baru untuk Pixar. Naskahnya mengemas semua isu ini dengan solid. Walau tidak selevel film-film masterpiece garapan Pixar, macam seri Toy Stoy, Monster Inc., Up, hingga Inside Out.

Akibat tidak dirilis di teater, agak sulit memang menilai kualitas visualnya. Jelas jauh dari kata buruk, tapi rasanya tidak sekualitas dengan film-film rilis teater yang diproduksi studio Pixar. Visualnya yang penuh warna membuat gambarnya amat nyaman untuk ditonton. Nuansa pantai berbukit dan kota pinggir laut mampu memberikan sesuatu yang berbeda untuk film animasi keluarga yang pernah diproduksi.

Ideal untuk target genrenya dengan nuansa eksotis negeri pizza, namun untuk standar film-film masterpiece produksi Pixar sebelumnya, Luca berada di garis rata-rata. Dengan aksi, sisi komedi berkelas, serta pesan ringan dalam filmnya membuat Luca adalah satu tontonan keluarga yang aman dan komplit. Toleransi antar “ras” bisa jadi adalah satu sisi paling urgen yang patut dicatat, di mana isu ini sejak ratusan tahun bahkan ribuan tahun lalu, umat manusia di belahan dunia mana pun masih saja terjebak masalah yang sama. “Ras” juga bisa mengarah ke isu lain yang lebih sensitif, seperti sudah saya sebut di atas. Studio Pixar merespon isu ini dengan gaya yang berkelas.
