Malignant adalah film horor thriller arahan sineas horor kawakan, James Wan. Wan seperti kita tahu adalah sutrada dan produser di balik sukses seri horor The Conjuring, Saw, dan Insidious. Film berbujet USD 40 juta ini dibintangi oleh Annabelle Wallis, Maddie Hasson, serta George Young. Wan yang kini telah menjadi sineas papan atas, terlebih setelah sukses Aquaman dan kini tengah menggarap sekuelnya, rasanya memiliki alasan khusus menggarap film ini. Lantas, jika dibandingkan karya-karya horor sebelumnya, di manakah posisi Malignant?

Seorang perempuan muda, Madison (Wallis) kini tengah hamil tua yang tinggal bersama suaminya yang berperangai kasar. Dalam satu momen sang suami menciderainya, namun beberapa saat kemudian sosok misterius membunuh suaminya secara brutal. Peristiwa tersebut menyebabkan Madison kehilangan janinnya, dan tak hanya itu, kini kewarasannya diuji ketika mata batinnya mampu melihat sosok misterius tersebut membunuh orang-orang yang sama sekali tidak ia kenal.

Dibandingkan dengan film-film horor Wan sebelumnya, Malignant jelas memiliki pendekatan berbeda. Rasanya ini adalah film horornya yang paling dekat dengan genre fiksi ilmiah (bahkan superhero?). Sisi aksi dan thriller kini lebih dominan ketimbang horor. Kisahnya berjalan amat menarik dengan kombinasi sisi investigasi dan horor yang terus memancing rasa penasaran nyaris sepanjang film. Tidak seperti gaya pendekatan horor sebelumnya yang lebih konvensional (jump scare), Malignant banyak menggunakan efek visual untuk mendukung visualisasi narasinya. Sisi horor memang lantas melemah, namun tidak untuk sisi thriller-nya.

Unsur ketegangan benar-benar terjaga dengan konsisten, nonstop, hingga menjelang klimaks. Naskahnya begitu teliti dan detil, sekalipun motif dibelakang premisnya jauh dari nalar. Kombinasi antara sisi misteri dan ketegangan membuat penonton sulit beranjak dari layar karena rasa penasaran kita yang terus terusik. Satu sekuen kecil di kantor polisi, sedikit banyak mengingatkan pada adegan pembantaian dalam The Terminator. Satu hal yang menarik adalah Wan kini banyak menggunakan lensa yang lebar (wide) untuk mengeksplorasi sisi setting-nya dengan seringkali bermain-main dengan tata cahaya. Tone warna filmnya pun, sekalipun ber-setting masa kini, mengesankan era 80-an, yang bisa jadi menggambarkan trauma sang protagonis yang belum hilang.

Sebuah horor aksi thriller menghibur, Malignant adalah satu pendekatan berbeda dari James Wan yang mencoba lepas dari tradisi horor Conjuring-nya. Satu hal yang sedikit mengganjal adalah sosok antagonisnya yang tak jelas asal-usulnya dan bagaimana ia bisa memiliki kemampuan psikis dan fisik demikian hebat? Banyak kejanggalan dan motif cerita yang belum dijelaskan dengan tuntas. Sekuel mungkin? Rasanya tidak. Yang jelas Malignant sayang untuk dilewatkan, terlebih jika kamu adalah fans sang sineas. Bagi James Wan, satu percobaan besarnya ini masih membuktikan bahwa ia adalah salah seorang sineas yang bertalenta tinggi.
