Okay! Madam is a South Korean action comedy film directed by Le Chul-ha. The film, which was released last August, is the first grossing film in South Korea during the pandemic to hit one million viewers in just eight days. This film stars several popular names, namely Uhm Jung-hwa, Park Sung-wo, Lee Sang-hoon, Lee Sun-bin, to Kim Hye-eun. Is this Korean film able to offer anything new to the genre again?

Mi-young and Seok-hwan are a low-class working couple with their little daughter. Once upon a time, they got a lottery ticket for a vacation to Hawaii. Mi-young’s intention to sell the tickets was finally dashed after seeing her daughter, who had lived far from being luxurious and was always mocked by her friends. On the plane trip, an unexpected act of terrorism occurs, which forces Mi-young to reveal her past identity as a reliable secret agent.

As is the tradition of South Korean films, they are constantly exploring Hollywood plots in a way and style that is very refreshing. This time, the “Die Hard” plot, which has been explored by many films, has been successfully packed into an entertaining action-comedy. One aspect that makes the story solid is the element of surprise. From the second act until the end, the audience was treated to surprises after surprises that were difficult to anticipate because they were distracted by the comedy side typical of “Korean films”. The audience is guaranteed not to get bored of seeing the character’s actions with a story twist that continues to appear throughout the film. The main cast, which numbered dozens of people, was almost flawless in playing its role.
