Outside the Wire adalah film fiksi ilmiah-perang yang dirilis oleh Netflix belum lama ini. Film arahan Mikael Håfström ini dibintangi Anthony Mackie, Damian Idris, Michael Kelly, serta Emily Beecham. Kisah tentang teknologi AI masa depan memang sudah tak terhitung jumlahnya, dan beberapa diantaranya terhitung masterpiece, lantas bagaimana dengan film ini?

Pada masa tahun 2036, teknologi robot sudah berdampingan dengan tentara untuk mengurangi angka yang tewas dalam perang. Situasi di Ukraina tengah memanas dan pasukan AS hadir di sana sebagai penengah, atau apapun motifnya. Dalam satu pertempuran kecil, tentara AS terpojok oleh pasukan musuh. Jauh diseberang sana, pilot drone tempur, Letnan Harp (Idris), mengambil keputusan genting yang berakhir pada kematian dua pasukan AS. Harp mendapat sangsi dan diterjunkan langsung ke lapangan. Ia menjadi bawahan Kapten Leo (Mackie) yang langsung mendapat misi rahasia untuk mendeteksi keberadaan bom nuklir yang amat berbahaya jika berada di tangan yang salah.

Sejak awal, kisahnya berjalan cepat dengan sajian aksi perang yang kita sendiri tak paham siapa pihak musuhnya. Kisah bergulir cepat berpindah kendali pada Harp yang aksinya berujung pada sangsi indisipliner. Kita bahkan tak tahu persis apa aksinya ini mengikuti prosedur atau tidak? Belum sepenuhnya bisa dicerna, kisahnya bergulir cepat kembali, begitu seterusnya, dan seterusnya, hingga akhir film. Kita tidak punya waktu untuk mencerna alur cerita yang disajikan karena informasi baru silih berganti masuk. Tak ada chemistry dan sulit untuk bisa larut dalam kisah filmnya.

Rasa kebingungan di atas ditambah lagi dengan ending yang mencengangkan. Ah, kita sekarang tahu apa persoalan utamanya. Ini menarik sekali. Apakah sang robot sejak awal mencoba berbuat sesuatu yang mulia? Saya pikir filmnya akan mengarah ke sini dan ternyata saya salah. Filmnya menjadi tak berpoin. Lalu untuk apa kisahnya ini semua? Umat manusia? Tak ada poin bukan karena tak ada pesan di dalamnya, namun karena semua bergerak terlalu cepat hingga kita tidak peduli dengan semuanya.

Plot Artificial Intellegence (AI) yang di luar kendali sudah jamak dalam film, namun Outside the Wire adalah salah satu yang terburuk karena tidak memiliki chemistry serta pesan cerita yang jelas. Plot dan konsep sejenis, sudah kita temui seperti dalam Watchmen dan Avengers: Endgame, mengorbankan secuil manusia untuk kebaikan seluruh umat manusia. Outside the Wire tidak mengarah ke mana pun selain Letnan Harp yang kini telah menebus kesalahannya dan menukarnya dengan kesalahan yang lain (jika sang robot terbukti benar).
