Chloe, a teenager who is confined to a wheelchair, is homeschooled by her mother, Diane. Chloe soon becomes suspicious of her mother and begins to suspect that she may be harboring a dark secret.

Run adalah film thriller yang ditulis dan diarahkan oleh Aneesh Chaganty yang sebelumnya sukses dengan film thriller unik, Searching. Film ini dibintangi oleh Sarah Paulson serta debutan muda Kiera Allen. Setelah pencapaian istimewa Searching, tak disangka sineas AS kelahiran India ini mampu melewatinya dengan mudah melalui film terbarunya yang dirilis melalui platform digital.

Alkisah Chloe (Allen) adalah seorang gadis muda yang mengidap beberapa penyakit sekaligus, antara lain asma, kelainan ritme jantung, diabetes, hingga kedua kakinya lumpuh. Secara unik, deretan kondisi medik Chloe disajikan melalui teks di awal film. Sang ibu, Diane (Paulson) merawat putrinya sendiri di rumah dengan berbagai fasilitas khusus untuk memudahkan mobilitas Chloe yang menggunakan kursi roda. Rutinitas pokok harian Chloe hanyalah minum obat dan belajar yang dimentori sang ibu sendiri. Suatu ketika, Chloe menemukan sebuah kejanggalan dari salah satu obat yang diberikan ibunya. Semakin jauh ia menyelidiki, Chloe mendapati sang ibu ternyata adalah bukan sosok yang selama ini ia pikir.

My Gosh. Sudah lama sejak pandemi sepanjang tahun ini, sebuah film bisa begitu mengejutkan dan menggairahkan melalui satu tontonan ini. Dengan tribute kuat dan thriller bergaya sineas klasik legendaris Alfred Hitchcock, sang sineas kembali mampu menyajikan tontonan sederhana dengan gaya amat berkelas. Adegan pembuka film ini saja, sudah membuat kita shock dengan sajian visualnya. Setelahnya hingga akhir, kita disajikan sebuah tontonan misteri dengan tingkat ketegangan tinggi, nonstop dengan hanya minim pemain. Kisahnya begitu intens dan penuh kejutan momen demi momen tanpa memberikan waktu kita untuk berpikir karena saking larutnya dan penasaran dengan kisahnya.

Sudah tampak sejak Searching, sang sineas begitu terampil menyajikan sebuah adegan di dalam ruang terbatas. Permainan ruang dengan kombinasi kamera dan editing, mampu mempermainkan ketegangan dan rasa penasaran penonton dengan mudahnya. Ibarat, jarak hanya satu meter pun mampu memberikan ketegangan maksimal. Satu adegan sederhana di apotik dengan dialog yang teramat cerdas dan berpacu dengan waktu, mampu mengusik rasa ketegangan kita begitu hebatnya. Tanpa terkecuali, dua pemainnya, Paulson serta debutan muda Kiera Allen, memberikan performa yang sangat luar bisa untuk memberikan sebuah tontonan langka ini.

Naskah brilian dengan plot sederhana, efektif, detil, ruang gerak yang terbatas, ketegangan maksimal, serta akting kuat dua pemainnya, Run boleh dibilang adalah film thriller ala Hitchcock terbaik sejak Misery (1980). Kombinasi sisi ketegangan dan horor yang begitu dahsyat dan komplit, jarang sekali kita dapatkan dalam sebuah film. Kita tunggu dengan penuh harap karya sang sineas berbakat dan terampil ini berikutnya. Entah kebetulan pula, kisahnya memiliki “spirit” bencana pandemi yang tengah kita alami. Karantina rumah yang dilakukan Chloe membuat kita terasa lebih akrab dalam banyak momennya. Ayo, jangan lewati film berkelas ini!
